eveglass: (books)
Today I went to my second-ever yoga class. The first one was back in May at a well-respected hot yoga studio down the street from my apartment. Suffice it to say, I was so exhausted and dehydrated afterwards that I couldn't even find the energy to write about it, and I swore I'd never do hot yoga again.

However! This week Marc and I signed up for the YMCA, and even though Marc is on a work shift this morning, I decided to head over and try out one of their (room temperature) yoga classes.

Guys... I think yoga may not be for me. I know a lot of people really love yoga, and that's great. You do what works for you. But for me, it just doesn't seem to be a good fit.

That's not to say I didn't get a workout. I certainly felt it more than I did the hot yoga class, where I was mostly focusing on not passing out from the heat. In today's class, I really felt my muscles working through the poses, and I'll probably be sore tomorrow. So that's a plus. On the minus side, however, are the various trappings that surround yoga as a "practice" as opposed to simply exercise.

The class was about 75 minutes, and the last 20 or so were spent in breathing meditation. And, look, I have no problem with lying down or meditating or what-have-you. I'm usually pretty tired after working out and would love to take a nap. But I don't go to the gym to focus on my breathing. I can do that at home if I want to. I go to the gym to work out.

While reminders about breathing through the movements was helpful, I didn't really need to be reminded to repeat my "affirmation" at the same time. "I'm balanced," "I'm peaceful," or other such phrases are, I'm sure, very helpful to some people. But they're not what I'm going to the gym for.

It's good that I went. I'm glad I got the chance to see what a non-hot yoga class is like. And I did appreciate some of the poses -- they're challenging and I definitely have room to improve. (So much room to improve...) But I suspect I won't be going back for yoga. Though I never thought I'd say this, I might just go for the more "normal" classes like toning, spinning, or aerobics. Uncharacteristic of me, I know, but there you have it.

Anyway, that's what I have to say about that. I'm glad I tried it, but I doubt I'm going back. Onwards!
1. Renovations: Our kitchen reno is starting tomorrow. We've got everything moved out of the kitchen, and a subset of it set up in Marc's office to use as a makeshift kitchen for the next two weeks. It's been a bit of an adjustment... but at least it's only for two weeks, and at the end of it we'll have a brand-new kitchen. Focus on the positive, and not the fact that nothing is actually covered in plastic yet.

2. Gaming: Continues apace. The finale of 7th Sea will be this Saturday, and will last either one or two sessions, depending on how fast we go. I've gotta say, it's really nice to see a game through to an actual conclusion, and not just fizzle away because of scheduling problems. Heavy Gear is also lots of fun, as always. The rest of my games... well, let's just say they're either not very frequent, or not super-amazing. A lot of them are new, though, so I'm hoping things pick up.

3. SCA: Sadly, letting it slide. Completely skipped out on yesterday's local event so that I could work on the kitchen, and I've been letting my saint stories lapse as well. I'm about 30 pages behind where I should be in the Golden Legend, which isn't an insurmountable gap, but I really should get back into it if I want to be ready by Pennsic.

4. Pennsic: Speaking of Pennsic, I'll only be going for Peace Week this year, probably arriving first Saturday and leaving middle Saturday. I'm sad that I won't get to do the two full weeks, but at least I'm getting something. Also, I really should start planning some garb and bardic stuff at some point, to say nothing about classes and scheduling. (Yes, I know we're only February. Pennsic's only 5 months away!)

5. Almost an Auntie: Marc's sister-in-law is due pretty much any day now. In fact, her "official" due date was today. Still no baby yet, but soon, very soon. I just wish I could cook food for the new parents, but see #1 above. Oh, well. I'm sure they'll still want food in a few weeks.

6. Work: Was very busy two weeks ago, but has mostly settled down for now. Stuff will probably pick up around March, when we start really ramping up for the Annual Meeting in September, but I'm now in that nice little phase where most of the membership renewals have been done, but I don't have any other big projects just yet.

7. Exercise: I admit, I weigh more now than I've ever weighed in my life. I bought some new jeans last week, and I'm a size 14, which is pretty much the biggest size I've ever worn. On the other hand, it'll probably start being warm enough in a few weeks that I can start walking to or from work without invoking the asthma demons, and soon Zombies Run 2 will come out, which makes me super, super happy. Even if it's another $8, I consider it money well spent. Definitely cheaper than the gym, or even an audio book, which is effectively what it is.
It's getting towards the end of yet another year, and as always, that's made me kind of introspective. And because I'm me, my mind has trended towards the idea of learning. I'm working full time, which means that I'm no longer in school. That makes me sad. But on the flip side, internet resources for learning are becoming more and more plentiful, such that I can learn pretty much anything I want in my own time, at my own pace, to whatever level I desire. That's the good thing. The bad thing is that I've never really had that level of discipline.

BUT! What if I could design myself a curriculum for 2013? What would it include? Roleplaying 401 probably isn't necessary (though I can imagine all sorts of cool topics, like, "How to design a GM-proof wish spell," "Min-maxing with classes you never knew existed," and "Statistics and dice: how to cheat believably"). But there are plenty of other things I'd like to learn, and here are some of them:

Cooking 101: The Basics and Beyond )

SCA Life 103: Persona Research )

Bardic Sources 302: The Golden Legend, Volume II )

Bardic Performance 211: Songwriting )

Bardic Performance 221: Harmonizing )

Bardic Performance 231: Guitar Basics )

French 356: Intermediate Written French )

Physical Fitness 102: Conditioning )

Science 101: Introductory Science Overview )

Math 251: Introduction to Statistics )

Yeah, see what I did with that last one, there? Tied the whole thing together. 'Cause I'm just that good. (HA!)

In any case, if I had all the time in the world, that's what I'd do this year. As it is, I'll try to do as many of them as possible. At least I know I'll always have something to do if I'm bored.
"Julie!" I hear you saying, or if you're really a hard-core Zombies, Run! fan, maybe you're saying, "Runner 5! What on Earth were you doing out running on a gray, misty day like this when you should be getting dressed for the wedding you're attending this afternoon?!" Or, well, maybe you're not saying it, but probably my mom is.

In any case, the answer is that I've been eating moderately unhealthily the last few days, will probably eat quite unhealthily tonight at the wedding, and I figured a bit of running might counteract it, just a bit.

Week 1, Run 2 )
So it looks like the people behind my ever-beloved Zombies, Run! have a new app out, and this time it's a couch-to-5k program. It's set in the same universe as the main Zombies, Run! app, between missions one and two, just as Runner 5 is getting acclimatized to Abel Township. There aren't really any spoilers per se, at least not yet. The premise behind the app is simple: a whole bunch of runners are out sick for smoke inhalation (they burned down a building to scare away a zombie horde, but got caught in the smoke), so Abel needs all the runners they can get. Enter you, Runner 5.

Week 1, Run 1 )
I was bored tonight. Yes, it does happen. And I figured it was such a beautiful night, it was time to finally finish season 1 of Zombies, Run! Because I really, really wanted to find out what happened after the last mission. I hoped there would be closure. I may have been optimistic. (Map and stats for today's mission can be found on my ZombieLink page.)

Spoiler alert: Zombies, Run mission 23 )
I'm getting close to the end of season 1 now, and the action is really ramping up. And since, conveniently, I was going over to a friend's place almost exactly 5k away yesterday, I decided to walk it in the lovely weather and find out what's going on in Abel Township. (Stats and map for this mission can be found on my ZombieLink page.)

Spoiler Alert: Zombies, Run mission 22 )
The weather was gorgeous in Montreal today -- at least in the shade -- and I figured it was time to help out at Abel Township again. The only complicating factor this time was a few mosquito bites I got Friday night at an outdoor barbeque, two of them annoyingly on my right foot. But no matter! The zombie apocalypse waits for no woman, and certainly not for her mosquito bites to heal! Stats and map for today's mission can be found on my ZombieLink page.

Spoiler alert: Zombies, Run mission 21 )
Okay, it was too hot to run away from zombies today. Way too hot. Like, humidex of 40 C / 105 F hot. Like, "asthmatic Runner 5s with low blood pressure should really know better" hot. But Six to Start put out a new update today (1.3) with their iPhone ZombieLink compatibility. You can see my spiffy new profile with all my runs. But not today's run. Because I was stupid today. More on that after the cut.

Spoiler alert: Zombies, Run mission 20 )
My goodness! Has it really been three and a half weeks since I last ran away from Zombies? Janine would be furious! But between two weekends out of town and another catching up, I've been super, super busy. And despite the utterly gorgeous weather here in Montreal, I only just managed to get out for another Zombie Run today. Still... better late than never. Particularly given the new nifty stuff announced by Six to Start today.

Spoiler alert: Zombies Run, mission 19 )
Okay, my first day of "I'm going to eat really healthy" failed utterly, consisting of lunch at a cafe and fast-food for dinner. So in recompense, I decided to brave the soon-to-be-inclement weather and run away from zombies.

Spoiler alert: Zombies, Run mission 18 )
It's my birthday! And as a special present, I discovered that Six to Start had featured me in their shout-out to Zombies, Run fans! How exciting! Of course, with all that hype, I had to run another mission today. Maybe the zombies have birthday cake. (No! The cake is a lie!)

Spoiler alert: Zombies, Run mission 17 )
Just stretchin' the old legs, pickin' up a few supplies for Abel Township, and all that jazz, right?

Spoiler alert: Zombies, Run mission 16 )
Yesterday's mission was supposed to be just a normal scouting run. So there should have been nothing strange at all. Right? (Ha. Ha.)

Spoiler alert: Zombies, Run mission 15 )
What happens when life begins to settle down after the apocalypse and everyone starts going stir crazy? A hilarious mission, that's what.

Spoiler alert: Zombies, Run mission 14 )
Yesterday's mission continued the investigation that's been going on for the last few runs, yielding a few answers and many more disturbing implications. Also, it confirmed for me how much I dislike walking up hills.

Spoiler alert: Zombies, Run mission 13 )
Between recovering from my cold, a week of truly horrible weather, and a very full social schedule, I haven't been able to run away from zombies in nearly two weeks. Which is a shame, because today the plot thickened... a very small amount.

Spoiler alert: Zombies, Run! mission 12 )
So that little head-cold I thought I was developing last week? Turns out it was a full-on illness that made me feel like I myself was a zombie for the next five days. I'm not entirely healed up yet, but enough that I felt I could run mission 11.

Spoiler alert: Zombies, Run mission 11 )
I'll say this much: trying to run (or in my case, briskly walk) away from zombies when you're developing a head cold is a new and not altogether pleasant experience. At least I leveled-up some buildings.

Spoiler alert: mission 10 )
Today was my longest walk yet -- 71 minutes, split between two missions. I wasn't planning on doing two missions today. Really, I wasn't. But mission 8 ended on a cliffhanger and I decided to do mission 9 to see if it got resolved. And it did... but only barely, and only right at the end.

Spoiler alert: missions 8 and 9 )
