Now that I'm back at karate again, I figured it was high time for "Life Lessons from the Dojo" to have its own dedicated home. So I've spent the last few days porting all my old content over to a new website. Moving forward, you can find all my life lessons at http://dojolifelessons.wordpress.com/

Note that I will not be updating my livejournal with new life lessons from the dojo. To find them, head over to the new site! See you there!

Today I got to help teach the kids' class, and even got an open offer to continue to teach the kids' class if I show up early enough. So... yay teaching!

#249: Just because you're experienced in some things doesn't mean you're experienced in everything )
#250: Training can happen on multiple levels )
#251: Clothes can indicate an intended audience )

I got roped into helping teach the kids' class yesterday, which was fun but also revealed that I really need to work on getting back my "I am in charge and you all need to listen to me" voice. Ah, well. Just another thing to add to the list.

#246: Practice hard, and the medals will come naturally )
#247: Feel your opponent )
#248: Sometimes you need a boost )

Getting back into the swing of things… and continuing to find more differences between what I’ve been taught and how things are done at this new dojo. Ah well. It’s not like I wasn’t expecting it.

#243: It’s hard to overcome the curse of knowledge )
#244: Leading by team still requires one person to be in charge )
#245: You haven’t really learned something until you can explain WHY you’re doing it )

Back to waking up early on Saturday for karate again. I can’t say it’s my favourite part of training, but at least I got to try out a whole bunch of Yoshukan katas.

#240: The power of meaningful gifts )
#241: It’s good to be exposed to higher-level material )
#242: It’s easier to learn things right the first time )

Tonight was my first “real” class at the new dojo. I’ve already paid my fees for the first three months, so I guess it’s time to dive in head-first again…

#237: Logistics are sometimes the hardest part of starting )
#238: With skill comes flow )
#239: Be prepared to update your terminology )

Tonight, after immersing myself in tai chi for two years, I returned to my first love: karate. I went to a trial class at an all-female dojo about a 20-minute walk from my apartment. The style practiced at this dojo (Yoshukan) is an offshoot of the style I most recently studied (Chito Ryu), so it was fairly familiar to me. I went with my white belt — again — but with luck, if I stay, I’ll progress pretty quickly and won’t find myself back and the bottom for too long. In the meantime, though, more karate means more life lessons!

#234: Know when to compromise )
#235: Orient yourself before applying force )
#236: Stay on target )

What’s creepier than a carnival? A haunted carnival, that’s what! Especially one inhabited by plenty of supervillains! Not that that’s ever stopped Our Heroes (tm) before…

I cancelled my Lufa Farms subscription last week because it was simply too expensive. Instead, I made a commitment to go to the Good Food Market, hosted by the NDG Food Depot. They've got some excellent deals, and since I only work half-days on Friday, it gives me more time to play around in the kitchen with whatever I've bought.

To keep the feel of the "not pretty but tasty" packages from Lufa, I decided to randomly roll what I'd buy from the market, and here's what I came up with during my first trip...

Here are some thoughts about it...

Why milk something for only two posts when you can do three? Here are my thoughts on how the first week of meal planning went.

Today was the big day, my first Lufa Farms basket! Here's a link to my meal plan and prep for this basket. So what did it look like when it finally arrived? Glad you asked! Behold!

And now, because it's me, a wall of text about the above:

For a while, I've considered joining Lufa Farms, a rooftop garden program here in Montreal. You select weekly basket items from their farm and their partner farms, and it's delivered CSA-style to your designated "pick up point." Riding the wave of September good intentions, this week I finally decided to take the plunge. My first pick-up day will be on Tuesday, and I got to prep my basket today.

My thought process and how I planned )

So that's where things stand right now. Will I be successful? I don't know. We'll how to see how things work out. Whew!

Issue three, and Our Heroes (tm) are off to the frozen arctic in search of their patron’s lost nephew. Sadly, it soon becomes clear that not everything is as it appears. More to the point, not everything is as non-sentient as it appears…

In fifteen days, I will be at Pennsic. As is inevitable, I am not nearly as ready as I thought I’d be. One of these years, I’m gonna do what I promise myself every year at War: get everything organized during my 50-week “town run” so that I’m super-prepped with plenty of time to spare.

Ahahahaha… I crack myself up sometimes. Let’s be honest: it’s gonna be like this forever.

While I only start my formal Pennsic diary once I get in the car to War, I have enough thoughts spinning in my head that I thought I’d write them all down. So consider this a preview of the Pocket Bard’s 2016 Pennsic Diary, two weeks early.
