Today I had a chance to put my very, very rusty Latin skills to use, as I had to verify a number of terms, mostly in reference to gladiators and the arena. All I have to say is, thank goodness for Perseus. I don't know how I would have managed otherwise.
So I was trying to write a note (in English) to someone, and I couldn't remember whether the spelling was "non sequitor" or "non sequitur."

"Well," thought I, "it's Latin, and that's a verb ending, so it would have to be 'tur.'"

"But wait," thought I, "'non sequitur' means 'it doesn't follow,' which is active. But 'tur' is the suffix for a passive verb. 'Non sequitur' doesn't mean 'it isn't followed.' What's up?"

"Oh, right," thought I, "sequor (to follow) is a deponent verb (active in meaning, passive in form). There actually isn't any way to say 'it isn't followed' using that verb. So I suppose that all makes sense now."

Did I mention all this flashed through my head on the walk from my desk to the kitchen, all of about 10 seconds?

Sigh. Is it the weekend yet?
1. Killjoy cooking with the Dungeons & Dragons crowd -- what would happen if the response to a new cookbook was like the response to the new D&D? Hilarity, that's what.

2. 11 tips for broaching difficult subjects -- just what the subject says. Useful and practical.

3. Kaamelott - The perfect fifth (video) -- for all my medieval music geek friends (you know you're out there). You'll like this. And laugh. Trust me.

4. 25 unbelievable pictures you may never have seen before -- some are just plain beautiful, others make you sit up and go, "woah, that's cool."

5. How to tie a sarong (video) -- who knew there were so many ways to tie a sarong? This is a long video (about 14 minutes) containing tons of different styles, both for men and women.

6. What women want (maybe) -- news flash: women find pictures of naked women more attractive than pictures of naked guys. Maybe.

7. Drix's Latin lessons -- courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] liamstliam, for all those people who have heard me talk about it but never perform it properly. All my Latinist and/or SCA friends, check this out.

8. Walkscore -- a fun little resource that tells you what amenities (grocery stores, cafes, boutiques, books, etc.) are available within walking distance of your house. It's not particularly comprehensive, but it's fun nonetheless.

Thoughts on Cooks & Bards )

Thoughts on Toronto )

Okay, so that second half was a bit melancholy for 9 am. I should probably get to work on the stuff that needs doing today. TTFN!
The most exciting news of the day: I passed Latin! Yay! Congrats to everyone else who passed, especially those of you who passed PhD. I aspire to one day attain your level of greatness.

My brother bought me two little graduation teddy bears. They're so cute! I may post pictures tomorrow.

In other news, I've been in Montreal about 10 hours, and I've already done roleplaying and been to a bar. Yup, I think my re-assimilation into Montréalais culture should go quite smoothly. On the other hand, I was mistaken for a Dawson student, which bodes ill on my plans to get a job there next year. (looking like a student = NOT looking like a prof) Time will tell.

The plan for tomorrow: 1. make some sense out of the chaos in my closet. 2. buy food and cook it. 3. meet Prof. Krantz at CIJR to catch up. 4. SCA practice. The rest of my week is still free, I believe. Now, to collapse into bed. G'night all.

How odd...

Apr. 19th, 2006 11:19 pm
Tonight, I found an envelope slipped under my door. It was addresed to me, but the sender was anonymous. As I opened it, I found two $10 gift certificates to Famous Players. I have absolutely no idea who sent it, or why. The only thing I can think of is that someone really liked all the holidays I've been posting on my door, or something. Because I don't know anyone in this building other than Jane, my floor's don, and she's not the type to leave anonymous gifts.

In other news, today I:
- wrote up the game summary for yesterday night (see last entry)
- wrote the PhD Latin exam and did very poorly
- had fun at the CMS pub outing
- read to page 282 of Game of Thrones
- was introduced to Gregg's Ice Cream (yes, I've been in Toronto since September and have never gone)
- got many confirmations for my going-away party on Friday night. (If you're reading this, you're invited!)
- watched an episode of B5: Wheel of Fire, the 4th-to-last episode of the series

All in all, a very good day. Tomorrow I'm going to get my new bras, pants (they needed to be shortened), and shoes. Possibly I will have tea at the Red Tea Box afterwards. At 6, there's a free cooking class here at Chestnut. Finally, at 8, there's going to be a dessert night at Massey, full of Dufflet pastries goodness.

So there you go. I'm enjoying myself immensely, and I wish the best of luck of everyone who's still not done the semester. Good luck, people writing the German exam! And g'night, everyone!
Today, I handed in my last paper and took the M.A. Latin exam. I officially have nothing else to do to get my degree. Yay!

In terms of the exam: I found the first two passages pretty straightforward, the third a bit tricky, and the fourth obnoxiously hard. Going over it afterwards with Eileen (who has now joined the darkside of the blogosphere as [livejournal.com profile] my_tw0_cents), I've decided that other than some stupid mistakes, either we both got it right, or we got it wrong in the same way. Hopefully, that's good enough for a pass.

Regardless, I won't know the results until next week. Could people in Toronto check my results for me? I'll be back in Montreal by the time they come out. My number is M16 (make what snarky comments you like).

Speaking of going away: an important announcement! This Friday, the 21st of April, at 9 pm, I will be having my Going Away Party. Come join me at the Duke of York for a final drink with the CMS hobbit! If you can read this and in Toronto, you're invited!

And now I have nothing to do for almost a week. The plan for tonight is: 1. Go to the World's Biggest Bookstore; 2. Buy George R.R. Martin's Game of Thones; 3. Go to Massey; 4. Read; 5. Repeat step 4.

Whee! I'm free at last!
Today consisted of:

- sweet potato casserole
- easter egg hunting
- Dogma
- The Princess Bride
- practically completing my final term paper

How could this day NOT be fantastic?!?

As an aside, perhaps the only thing weirder than needing stick-glue at 11pm on Easter Sunday is going off on a hunt for said stick-glue at 11pm on Easter Sunday. In the end, I was successful, and even got asked out by a random passerby on the street. (The answer was "no," of course.)

So. Tomorrow I hand in my last term paper (the only thing left to do is glue down the diagrams and add captions), take the MA Latin exam, and then my semester is done. Yay! Strangely, I'm not nervous for the exam. I've been working hard all year, and whatever I know by this point, that's what I know. I won't learn anything new in the next 14 hours that will make or break the exam. I may go over a few old sight passages or some Vulgate tomorrow morning, just to warm up, but I will not panic. I'll be fine, and so will everyone else in the class. The power of George is with me!

M.A. people: who wants to go out afterwards? Duke of York, perhaps?
This entry was composed on the train returning to Toronto.

First, a few brief points of note:

(re)inventing myself; language crossovers; who needs sleep? )

And now onto something a little more significant: the reason I came into Montreal, my grandfather's bar mitzvah.

My impressions of the ceremony and other moving stuff behind this cut )

Right. As I said, this was composed on the train, so that I can just copy/paste it when I get back to my room. It's 11:10, I'm already tired, and suspect I won't get any less tired between now and the time I go to bed. I'm posting this and collapsing. So... g'night all!
eveglass: (hug me)
Does someone, somewhere, have a toggle switch for my life, in which the two toggles are "horrific" and "fantastic"? If so, could they please give me control of the switch and let me tamper with it so there are a few "in the middle" settings? Please?

Some stuff about today, in which the toggle has been generally set to 'good' )
eveglass: (hug me)
In some cultures, seven is a sacred number )

And that's it for tonight. I'm off to bed: g'night all!
eveglass: (hug me)
First, I have been informed that I have a new reader to this blog. Hi, Grandpa! If you figure out how to use the "post comment" button (it's at the bottom of this post), feel free to say "hi!"

Next, another B5 Latin quote, this time on request from LC:

Delenn: "Solus unus praefectus humanus umquam pugnam contra classem Minbariorum sustinuit. Ille post me. Vos coram me. Si magni vitas vestras aestimatis, alibi este!"
("Only one human captain has ever survived battle with a Minbari fleet. He is behind me. You are in front of me. If you value your lives, be somewhere else!")

(Latinists, I find that first sentence extremely clumsy. If you have a way of tightening it up, I'd be happy to hear it.)

Now, since I've been nice to you and given you more geekdom, I would like some reciprocity. A few days ago, I asked which jobs would be a good fit for me. Five people replied. Thank you, people who replied! On the other hand, as of 10:53 pm today, there are 80 people who have friended me, and I know of at least 5 more who read this journal but don't have LJ accounts. Where are you people?!? Make yourselves heard! Extra hugs for people who answer!

Finally, the requisite bit about what I did today. )

Now it's about 11, so I think I'll read in bed for a while. There is much to do tomorrow, including a poker tournament at Massey. Before that, there is much schoolwork that needs to be done, most importantly preparing for my two presentations. G'night all! (And remember to tell me what job you think fits me!)
I have a presentation on Monday and another on Tuesday. Neither are even close to being ready. In fact, for the Tuesday one, I don't even have a solid topic yet. Ah, panic. How I (didn't) miss you.

In other news, Latin translation this morning was an interesting challenge. We're reading Isidore of Seville's Etymologiae. It isn't so much hard as it is tricky. The word order is somewhat strange, and so you really have to take each sentence very methodically: find the finite verb, find its subject, find its object, break up the sentence into clauses, etc. It's a challenge, but it's a fun challenge. (Yes, I know. I'm a geek.)

Finally, something really nifty as a compensation for this boring post: a scribe in the US was commissioned to produce a manuscript using nothing but period materials and techniques. The manuscript was a book of Ecclesiastes, done in the style of an 8th century Northumbrian Lindisfarne Gospel. It is utterly stunning, and the documentation is great too. Click to see page 1, in which he prepares the parchment and does the calligraphy, and page 2, which contains stunning illumination.

And now, onwards to the library to be with people just as panicked as I. TTFN.
And now, for today's installment, a variety of B5 quotes... in Latin!

1. "Non Zathras fuit. Zathras fuit!"
("That was not Zathras. That was Zathras!")

2. "Ivonavae auscultabo. Non suggestiones Ivonavae neglegam. Ivonava Dea est. Et, si umquam interum hoc accidit, ispa Ivonava pulmones tuos eripiet!"
("I will listen to Ivonava. I will not ignore Ivonava's recommendations. Ivonava is God. And, if this ever happens again, Ivonava will personally rip your lungs out!")

3. "Quis sum? Susan Ivonava, ductrix, Andrei et Sophiae Ivonavae filia. Dextra ultionis et caliga vilissimum corporem tuum usque ad terram calcitratura. Mors incarnata sum et ultimum viventem umquam videbis. Deus me misit."
("Who am I? I'm Susan Ivanova, Commander, daughter of Andrei and Sofie Ivanov. I am the right hand of vengeance, and the boot that is gonna kick your sorry ass back to Earth. I am death incarnate and the last living thing you're ever going to see. God sent me.")

4. Morden: "Quid facies, Mollare? Insulam displodes?"
Londo: "Etiam... quia hoc dicis..."
[boom!]
("Morden: "What are you going to do, Mollari? Blow up the island?"
Londo: "Actually... now that you mention it...")

5. G'Kar: "Quod potestas facit vidi. Quod postestas constat vidi. Numquam alter atlerum aequat."
("I have seen what power does. And I have seen what power costs. The one is never equal to the other.")

Questions for Latinists )
Today's thought: You know it's going to be one of those days when you pick a fight with an inanimate object, and lose.

Also, another quote from "Zathras speaks Latin" (Latinists, feel free to critique):

"Tempus defluit? Tempus defluere nequet. Tempus infinatus est. Tu finitus. Zathras finitus. Hoc non aptum instrumentum est. Numquam hoc utendum est."
("Run out of time? Cannot run out of time. Time is infinite. You are finite. Zathras is finite. This is wrong tool. No, never use this.")

And, because I went to the gym today, it's time for more Thoughts from the Gym!
Thoughts from the Gym, #5 )

Nothing much else happened today. I did a fair amount of schoolwork (yay!) and some laundry (because I had no clean socks), but my day was mostly boring. That's it for me. G'night all.
eveglass: (hug me)
Tonight's title quote comes to us from Delenn. Just when you thought she was all sweetness and light, she springs this, and with a perfectly cheerful countenance, I might add.

Today has been odd for me. My moods are doing weird swingy things, going from content (or even happy) to a vague feeling of listlessness and withdrawl. It's as though my mind really wants to cry about something, but there's nothing there, so it just floats around feeling odd. I can't say I particularly enjoy it, but it's better than out-and-out crying.

My day behind the cut, in which I find some validation in both my current and future potential, and containing some reflections on Babylon 5. )

So now it's past midnight and I'm going to bed. Perhaps I'll be able to fall asleep in good time tonight, instead of tossing and turning as I've been doing for about a week. G'night all!
As it looks like I won't be heading out for the rest of the evening (whatever will I do?), I figured I might as well post this now. First, a request: does anyone have a copy of Genesis, "Land of Confusion" on their computers? It's been stuck in my head for days and it's against residence regs to use peer-to-peer file sharing. If anyone can send it to me, I will be very grateful.

Next, a toy for all you Scottish (or wannabe Scottish) people: the custom tartan generator! You can even order tartans in your custom colours and patterns!

Also (continuing in a vague theme), someone apparently beat me to being the first SCA-themed podcast. I don't necessarily like the way they format the show in terms of audio, and I don't like the focus on heavy fighting, but they did get off their behinds to do it before I did, so kudos to them.

Finally, in the continuing Latin madness, I've been at it again:

Zathras speaks in Latin )

Now, do I do more work, or do I veg for a few hours? Decisions, decisions...
I was reminded tonight that tomorrow is Dragon Dormant's Baronial birthday. And I realized a call had gone out for songs for baby Anoriel, and I hadn't written anything. In a fit of inspiration, it came to me... a Latin version of "The wheels on the bus"! And I wrote it. Dear Lord, what have I done?

Lyrics behind here. DD people attending the event, feel free to take! )

Okay, yes. I've been saying it to everyone else this week and I now must say it to myself, "I'm a geek." Latinists in the group, feel free to come up with more verses, but know that you will also be firmly placed in the "geek" category. DD people, enjoy! Let me know what Anoriel thinks!
eveglass: (demons of stupidity)
Translating Latin... 99 lines down, 44 to go. I'm calling it quits for the day: my brain is completely fried. I'm VERY glad I did my writing first, and not after.

In other news, happy Chinese new year. This year is the year of the dog, and I was born in the year of the dog. I'm sure there's something deep and meaningful to be found in this assocation, but, as I said, my brain's fried.

Now, off to Massey to see how many people have survived over 66 hours.
eveglass: (hug me)
Be warned: I'm tired so this post rambles. To the anonymous poster from yesterday: you might want to stop here and go look at Foamy now. Anyone still interested, read on!

Shopping in the Kensington market )

Murder most foul )

After being so mercilessly killed, I went to watch a friend of mine play varisty volleyball. Our team won handily. Go us! From there, I swung by the World's Biggest Bookstore. Thankfully for my wallet, I didn't find anything that called out to be mine.

Procrastination only takes you so far )

It's now 10:30 on my computer's clock. My plan for the rest of the night is to do a brief trip to Timmys, come back, stay home and translate Latin words for a while. Then, sleep. Tomorrow is laundry and lots of schoolwork, and possibly dinner with my Toronto family (depending on the state of schoolwork).

G'night all!
