Okay, it was too hot to run away from zombies today. Way too hot. Like, humidex of 40 C / 105 F hot. Like, "asthmatic Runner 5s with low blood pressure should really know better" hot. But Six to Start put out a new update today (1.3) with their iPhone ZombieLink compatibility. You can see my spiffy new profile with all my runs. But not today's run. Because I was stupid today. More on that after the cut.
So it's really hot today. I think I mentioned that. WAY to hot to be running outside. But thankfully, Montreal has this network of underground malls and public buildings that are -- more or less -- air conditioned, and I figured I could walk through them. I wasn't quite sure what would happen to the GPS when I went into the underground city and lost connectivity, but I discovered in about a minute and a half: the game fritzes out. The time keeps going up, but it stops logging distance and pace, which is kind of annoying.
The good news is that there's an accelerator mode for just this sort of situation. The bad news is that it means I can't show you my super-spiffy route through the underground city. Oh, well. Easy come, easy go. You'll have a new map next time.
Anyway. Today in Abel Township, tensions are heating up with New Canton. I was paired up with everyone's bestest buddy, Runner 8, who put on her whole "I'm have a coughing fit" routine to shut off her transmitter and have a heart-to-heart with me. Turns out there are no less than five military or paramilitary organizations in the area. Turns out the actual military -- who Runner 8 works for -- is funding something called Project Greenshoot, which is really interested in *something* in Abel. Which is why I was sent. Sadly, I don't really know anything more about Project Greenshoot than Runner 8 does.
In this middle of all this exposition, a group of extremely fast zombs came on the radar, and then someone started shooting at them. We thought they were New Canton people. The New Canton people (conveniently audible through the headset I picked up a few missions ago) thought it was us. Obviously, there's a third party in the area. The only question is, who?
Two more complications: 1. New Canton, due to this whole belief that we're shooting at them, is upping their timetable on their raid, and will be attacking Abel within the next 24 hours; 2. The New Canton operator, Nadia, picked up the signal from my headset and now believes that Lem, the zombified New Canton runner, is alive. This can only end badly.
Mission 21 is called "Siege," so that pretty much gives away the plot for next time, I think. I'll let you know after I run it... after this heat wave. I will not be so stupid again.
"How stupid were you, Julie?" I hear you asking. Well, remember how I said I was planning on walking through the underground city so that I could escape the heat? Well, I did that for about 35 minutes, in a wide U shape starting from work and ending 7-10 blocks east. Sadly, I actually needed to be four blocks WEST of work and a few blocks north, and there is no underground city for the top part of the U. And the air conditioning isn't quite as uniformly cool as I'd hoped. So I decided to go outside.
It's hot out. Did I mention that? The outside part of the walk took 18 minutes. It was a long, long, hard 18 minutes, where all I could think about was finding a water fountain. (Yeah, I could have planned my supplies better. Runner 5 would have brought water.) At least the mission ended right around the time I headed outside, so I didn't need to focus on story, which was good. (I'd still love for Radio Abel to come back. Maybe in update 1.4?)
So that's it for now. No more running away from zombies until it's cooler out, and I don't care if Abel is under attack by demons from hell in addition to zombies and New Canton. They'll just have to wait. *nods firmly*
