1. Renovations: Our kitchen reno is starting tomorrow. We've got everything moved out of the kitchen, and a subset of it set up in Marc's office to use as a makeshift kitchen for the next two weeks. It's been a bit of an adjustment... but at least it's only for two weeks, and at the end of it we'll have a brand-new kitchen. Focus on the positive, and not the fact that nothing is actually covered in plastic yet.

2. Gaming: Continues apace. The finale of 7th Sea will be this Saturday, and will last either one or two sessions, depending on how fast we go. I've gotta say, it's really nice to see a game through to an actual conclusion, and not just fizzle away because of scheduling problems. Heavy Gear is also lots of fun, as always. The rest of my games... well, let's just say they're either not very frequent, or not super-amazing. A lot of them are new, though, so I'm hoping things pick up.

3. SCA: Sadly, letting it slide. Completely skipped out on yesterday's local event so that I could work on the kitchen, and I've been letting my saint stories lapse as well. I'm about 30 pages behind where I should be in the Golden Legend, which isn't an insurmountable gap, but I really should get back into it if I want to be ready by Pennsic.

4. Pennsic: Speaking of Pennsic, I'll only be going for Peace Week this year, probably arriving first Saturday and leaving middle Saturday. I'm sad that I won't get to do the two full weeks, but at least I'm getting something. Also, I really should start planning some garb and bardic stuff at some point, to say nothing about classes and scheduling. (Yes, I know we're only February. Pennsic's only 5 months away!)

5. Almost an Auntie: Marc's sister-in-law is due pretty much any day now. In fact, her "official" due date was today. Still no baby yet, but soon, very soon. I just wish I could cook food for the new parents, but see #1 above. Oh, well. I'm sure they'll still want food in a few weeks.

6. Work: Was very busy two weeks ago, but has mostly settled down for now. Stuff will probably pick up around March, when we start really ramping up for the Annual Meeting in September, but I'm now in that nice little phase where most of the membership renewals have been done, but I don't have any other big projects just yet.

7. Exercise: I admit, I weigh more now than I've ever weighed in my life. I bought some new jeans last week, and I'm a size 14, which is pretty much the biggest size I've ever worn. On the other hand, it'll probably start being warm enough in a few weeks that I can start walking to or from work without invoking the asthma demons, and soon Zombies Run 2 will come out, which makes me super, super happy. Even if it's another $8, I consider it money well spent. Definitely cheaper than the gym, or even an audio book, which is effectively what it is.
Okay, it's been a while. Here's a short update:

1. Bread machine. I've been remiss in posting about this, but Marc's parents got me a bread machine for my birthday and I've been baking a lot of bread. Mostly I've been doing a Russian black bread that's hearty and wonderful, to the point where I've got a half-loaf of store-bought bread in my pantry that expired a week ago, which is nigh unheard of in our house.

2. Work. Two weeks ago, I spent a week at home taking a course from Learning Tree International on introductory .NET, which will hopefully be very helpful in my new role as web site maintainer. Last week, my boss was on vacation. Monday is a semi-important deadline, and all the panicky last-minute people are coming out of the woodwork. Thankfully, I am far more capable at dealing with them this year than I was last year. (Still no word on the final version of my updated contract, but it'll come.)

3. Pennsic. Prep has been slower than anticipated, due to a lack of free time. I won't have time to versify all the saint stories, but I'll try to have at least 6-10 familiar enough that I can tell them as stories. My schedule is shaping up and I've already got double-booked moments. Yup, it's definitely Pennsic.

4. Gaming and fanfic. Still in four games because (weirdly) none of them have ended in the last seven months. I'm still enjoying them all; I just wish I had free time. *grin* I've also written about 35,000 words since the beginning of the year, a variety of short-story fiction for my games, not counting the lines of the night I post after each session.

5. Relationship. Still good. Marc finished his stage last week, and won't be able to take his government licensing exam for a couple of months, which means we get to have a short breather. We're contemplating a trip to Disney World early next year, if our schedules and vacation time allow.

6. iToy vs. Reading. I admit, since I got my iPhone, I really haven't been reading books... pretty much at all. All the moments I'd normally spend reading, I'm now playing on my phone. I wonder if this makes me part of the problem with society.

7. Chocolate! Mark your calendars -- Sunday, July 15, will be the "Celebrate ALL the Things" Chocolate Fondue Potluck! Official announcement to come soon, but we're in arrears as far back as New Years, so we've got a lot of celebrating (and chocolate eating) to catch up on.
Unlike years past, I did not have a true break for the holidays this year. Instead, I've got two 4.5-day weekends, the first of which just ended. Despite that, it was quite pleasant, consisting of many of my favorite holiday traditions. One of these is the Christmas Eve drive with my dad, brother, and boyfriend, in which we drive around looking at the pretty Christmas lights and listening to The Shepherd by Frederick Forsyth, and then we go find somewhere that sells donuts. (A far easier proposition now than it was when I was a kid.)

Christmas Day was spent with Ian's family up in Laval. I took a preventative Benadryl, and while it knocked me out for a while, it worked as advertised: I was able to spend two five-hour stints in a house with two cats, with only minor discomfort. Yay! I gave out all my cookies, which seemed to go over quite well. (Ian's cousin Asha was very vocal about liking them; her favorites were the snickerdoodles.) Marc and I got a few presents as well: some throw blankets, a couple of tear-away day calendars, two heart-themed mugs, and a lovely sectioned serving platter. We also saw The Adventures of Tintin, which surprised me by being highly enjoyable and a great movie to get in the mood for playing 7th Sea.

Monday I spent the day conquering the pixelated world of Civ IV with Eric, and Tuesday I cooked for the week. (Something I sadly didn't do last week, and my wallet is lighter as a result.)

Also yesterday, I went with Marc to Alpenhaus to celebrate our five-year anniversary, which will be on New Year's. Tasty food, good company, actual wood-burning fire... life is good, my friends. Yes, it is.

And now I'm back at work for a 2.5-day week, and then I'll be on my second mini-vacation. I suppose I should actually attempt to get some work done, huh?
Yesterday, Marc and I went to a wedding. Specifically, the wedding of one of his old friends. I didn't know a single person there other than Marc and his brother, but that's never stopped me before. This is the fourth wedding we've attended in the last twelve months, and I suppose it shouldn't be surprising that I'm starting to discover preferences I never knew I had. Even though I'm not engaged, I hope to be one day, and as Marc and I attend the weddings of friends and family, I find myself keeping a little mental checklist of things I like and things I don't.

Based on yesterday's celebrations, for example, I now know:
- When I recess from the ceremony, I want people singing "Siman Tov" and maybe throwing hard candy.
- I want a hora. I really awesome hora.
- I want a big enough dance floor to have a really awesome hora.
- The MC needs to know what he's doing. If he (or she) specifically brings all the guests onto the dance floor, including the groom taking a break upstairs, there better be a reason for it beyond, "Let's all dance."
- I like my eardrums and I think my guests like theirs. I want the MC to keep this in mind when he sets the volume levels for the music.
- Certain songs will not be played at my wedding. These include, "Macho Man," "I'm every woman," "YMCA," etc.
- The bride yesterday had a basket of flip-flops for the ladies (in the wedding's colors), in case their feet were hurting and they didn't want to dance in their high heels. I may steal this idea.
- I'd like to have some fun activity at the reception. At a wedding we attended a month ago, there was a photo booth with lots of fun props (blow-up guitars, dinosaur masks, feather boas, etc.). Last night there was a "make your own candy bag" station. I want something along those lines.

Little things like that. Oddly, I don't have preferences for many of the big questions ("Where would you like the ceremony?" "What would you serve for the meal?" "Who would officiate?"). But I apparently have very strong preferences for the details. Oh, well. The more you see, the more you learn about yourself, I suppose.
1. Hi-Fidelity Star Trek Quartet (3-minute video) -- a barbershop quartet spoofing Star Trek! Too funny! (And if you like this one, check out part 2.)

2. The proliferation of a virtual species (you'll like this alot) -- for those Internet grammar mavens who get frustrated by people spelling "alot" instead of "a lot," this is your site. You'll like it. Alot.

3. Welcome to the Dark Side: British Isle Named Skywatching Paradise -- when I was younger, I used to do amateur astronomy. This article makes me really want my next vacation to be to Sark Island.

4. Norse problem flowchart (picture) -- anyone with even a passing interest in Norse mythology owes it to themselves to take 10 seconds to view this 4-item flowchart. (Warning: may not work for non-Facebook users.)

5. Life-size Settlers board for Burning Man (pictures) -- I'm an avid Settlers player, and when I win my millions and buy a mansion in some tropical paradise, I'm putting this up in the backyard.

6. Tim Minchin - If I didn't have you (4-minute video) -- hilarious and catchy. Be sure to watch until at least 0:50 before making any snap judgments.

7. The Iowa House v Zach Wahls and his moms (3-minute video) -- I don't often delve into US politics, but this one's worth watching. When I have kids, I want them to be this articulate and persuasive regarding their beliefs.
Hmmm... been a few days since I've said anything substantial. I suppose I've been doing all my silly, "here's what's happening" updates on Facebook, and haven't had anything more major to say here. But for those people who don't use Facebook, here are a few of the more interesting things from the last few days:

1. Marc's out of town for the weekend, attending the shiva of a family friend. Being home for three days without Marc has been... odd. Certainly it's not the longest he's been gone, but it's been odd nonetheless.

2. I started doing a bit of copy editing on Wikipedia and joined their Guild of Copy Editors. It gives me something marginally productive to do when I'm not working. Though I suppose it would be *more* productive to actually look harder for a new job.

3. Hosted an awesome D&D game here tonight. It's the first time our characters got back together after a year of doing their own separate things. I really like the direction my character's taking. Should make for some fun roleplaying in the near future. Oh, and I made chocolate chip cookies for the game. Chocolate chip cookies are never out of place.

4. Hosting a game tomorrow -- the first session of Ian's new Wild West game. My character's a female mail courier who used to work for Wells Fargo. Should be lots of fun. There will be chocolate chip cookies at that too, because one batch makes six dozen cookies, and I (foresightedly) only put out half tonight.

5. It's past my "turn into a pumpkin" hour. G'night all.
Today is the first day (of two) where I will be baking all my holiday cookies. (Disclaimer: anyone who's expecting presents from me will be getting cookies this year. This message brought to you by a year of unemployment.) My freezer is super-tiny, so I've got to make all the cookies very close to Christmas so they don't go stale. So today I'm making all the dough and baking the spritz cookies, and tomorrow I'll bake the chocolate chip cookies.

Of course, this has necessitated me being a bad girlfriend.

Marc likes sleeping in, and I don't blame him. But once I get to the point of having the dough prepared, I'm going to need to access the oven every 3-4 minutes. If Marc is trying to make his omelet while I'm trying to make cookies, we *will* kill each other. So I've got to wake him up to tell him to get his breakfast ready, so I can start baking. Otherwise, there just won't be time.

So I'm a bad girlfriend this morning. Hopefully the gift of raw chocolate chip cookie dough will put me back in the good books.

Figures...

Dec. 8th, 2010 02:57 pm
The house has been more-or-less quiet all day. So obviously, for the one phone call when I really needed quiet (a call-back from a placement agency), Marc was running the vacuum and couldn't hear me shouting at him to turn it off. And the phone I was using didn't have a hold button.

Oh, well. At least the woman was nice enough to laugh it off. ("Your boyfriend's vacuuming? Don't stop him! That's progress!")
Hi everyone. I realize in looking back through my recent entries that although I've been posting quite a bit, I haven't actually written anything about how my life's been going in a while. I figured I owed you. (And if you figure differently, you can always click away from this post. The internet is nice that way.)

1. Job hunting: After a very, very long period of procrastination, I sent out seven CVs last week. (To Davids Tea, McGill, Concordia, and the Côte St-Luc library.) Seven isn't great, but it's better than nothing. Now I just need to keep the momentum going and remember to follow up on the ones I sent. Also, at some point I should really figure out what I want to do when I grow up.

2. Roleplaying: Lots of gaming, as you can probably tell from all my "lines of the night" posts. Enjoying it muchly, and worry that when I get a new job, I'll have to cut back. Four games at a time (including two that are weekly or almost-weekly) take up a lot of time. Oh, and I may be co-GMing a one-shot game at the end of December.

3. Apartment: I've now been in my "new" apartment for slightly over a year, and I've mostly adjusted to its little quirks. We're getting some tiny ants in the living room and a bit of a resurgence of bugs in the pantry (despite everything being in sealed containers), but I attribute that mostly to the season. I may be getting a new sofa soon to replace the ratty, ripped one, which would be very nice.

4. Relationship: It's been a tough few weeks. Marc's been dealing with some Stuff (tm) that it's not my place to talk about, but it looks like he's finally made a decision and hopefully will be less stressed in the coming weeks. I've been dealing with my own stress, mostly from psyching myself up for job hunting. I think our "date night" once a week is a great idea, and we'll keep that going.

5. Cooking: I'm pleased that I've progressed to the point where I can make a recipe and 85% of the time it will be not only edible but relatively tasty. I was not at this point a year and a half go. That's progress! (And bloody-minded stubbornness, of course.)

6. SCA: My SCA participation recently has been sporadic. I very much enjoyed Winter Nights in Albany and have taken a few tentative steps towards starting up bardic more regularly here, but it hasn't really gotten off the ground yet. The truth is that with so much of the rest of my week scheduled (2-3 nights gaming, 1 night with Marc, 1 night with family), I don't want to give up a weeknight for the SCA unless I know there are going to be people attending who want to do bardic. And people won't show up unless I make it a more regular event. So I'm sort of stuck in a catch-22 here.

7. Weight: Less good. Sometime between late 2008 (when I started working for Softitler full-time) and this summer, I managed to gain back almost all the weight I lost in 2006-7. I haven't been doing karate (see: lack of free evenings), and while I've been trying to eat better and do more walking, I keep finding myself gifted with unexpected baked goods, or going out for dinner, or a million other little things that sabotage me. I've managed to lose 2-3 pounds since the summer, but that's not much, especially with holiday season approaching.

8. Writing: I continue to write short stories for my various roleplaying games. I'm probably up to around 25,000 words for the year, which is nowhere near the 161,000 I wrote last year (85% of which were for one particular character), but there were special circumstances last year that I doubt I'll ever have again. No new bardic works lately; I really need to stop procrastinating and start in on that.

9. Other people in my life: My family is well, my step-sister is returning from her honeymoon, and Marc's family is well too. Friends seem to be in varying states of "stressed" and "okay" -- let me know if you need to come over for tea. The stuffed animals all seem to be very happy, especially since Grunty and Sheepie just got washed not too long ago.

10. Parties: The next party is probably going to be in late November or early December, and I have yet to decide if it's going to be another chocolate fondue party or a Channukah party with latkas. Any thoughts?

Current infatuations: Right now, I'm completely in love with Davids Tea (their winter teas come out today!), the book Mindset by Carol S. Dweck (review to come as soon as I finish the last chapter), and Echo Bazaar (highly addictive -- don't say I didn't warn you).
Tomorrow, Marc and I are hosting a meet-and-greet for the people in our building. (No idea how many will come, but the announcement's been up for a week and a half.) I was planning to go out and buy some cookies and other desserts, when Marc's mom volunteered to bake for us. Now, Marc's mom is a super-awesome baker. Beyond that, she doesn't know the meaning of "one batch." When she bakes, she *bakes*.

Last week, she came over with cranberry-chocolate shortbread. It's now in our freezer. Today, she called to let me know that she's made three types of cookies, some bars, and did I want a cake or another type of cookie?

Well, there goes my diet plans for the week. *grin*
Yay! Marc is home! Huzzah!

We spent a wonderful few hours last night before we both collapsed into little heaps of unconsciousness. This morning, Marc left very early to go to his 8 a.m. class. In fact, he's got four 8 a.m. days this semester and 31 hours of class per week, which is going to be a huge challenge. I wonder when we'll see each other!

The next few days are going to be a bit tricky for both of us as we readjust to living together. I had a period of a few weeks after Marc left where it was awkward for me to be living alone. I suspect we're about to go through a similar period of awkwardness for the next week or two. I've already discovered small things that... "annoy" would be too strong a word... but small things that need readjustment. But we'll get through it. The good news is that Marc's home, and I'm keeping him.
Groceries newly stocked, including Marc's favorite? Check.
Baked goods acquired from Marc's mom? Check.
Windows closed, dehumidifier on, making the house nice and comfy? Check.
Marc's side of the bed cleaned off of my stuff? Check.
Flight status loaded in web browser for obsessive reloading? Check.
House cleaned and tidied? Ch-- Who am I kidding? That one's not gettin' done.

Boyfriend home? REAL SOON NOW!

The good news is that Marc's on a fire.
The bad news is also that Marc's on a fire.

See, Marc makes most of his money over the summer when he's actually on fires, as opposed to, say, cleaning out the engine for the twelfth time in a week. And because it's been a record wet year in his corner of Montana, he hasn't actually been on any fires this summer. Which is bad.

So when I couldn't get through to him last Thursday night, there was a chance he was on a fire, and that was good. Then I couldn't get through to him Friday or Saturday, either. When I got home on Sunday, I checked the dispatch website and discovered that he was, in fact, on a fire.

Tonight he called me for a few minutes from one of his crew-mate's cell phones. It's the first time I've spoken to him since last Wednesday, and I probably won't get another chance until this Wednesday.

On the upside, he's finally making some money and doing what he went out to Montana to do, which is really good. On the downside, I miss talking with him.

Of course, he comes home for good on Sunday, so at least I know that this "not speaking to Marc" hiatus is going to be short-lived. Yay for almost having Marc back!
Marc left Saturday morning for Montana. I still haven't heard from him (no one's picking up at the bunk house), but I'm working on the theory that no news is good news. The corollary, of course, is that I'm living on my own in the apartment until he gets back. For the most part, living alone isn't really that much different from when Marc was here; even when he was in the apartment, we were often in different rooms, doing our own thing. But it's the little things that drive home to me that he's not here:

- A new-found sense of accountability. If "someone" lets the dishes pile up, doesn't take down the trash, or forgets to water the plants, I've got no one to blame but myself. (Though the sink has had far fewer dishes in it these last two days...)

- No boyfriendly distractions. I can't sneak a kiss, or take five minutes to chat. Dinners are by myself unless I invite someone over or go out.

- The bed is big. It's not the first time I've had the king-size bed to myself, but it's weird not needing to worry about staying on my side.

- Paying less attention to the stairs. Often, when Marc wasn't home, I would be hyper-aware of people walking up and down the stairs, wondering if any of them were him. Now, since I know they won't be, I completely tune it out unless the people are very noisy.

- Not needing to call out "Honey, I'm home" when I walk in the door.

Those are just a few things that are different. I've been (for the most part) good about keeping myself distracted by friends and the Internet, so I'm not in the full-blown loneliness phase yet. But it's certainly odd.
We dropped Marc off at the airport at 6 a.m. this morning, after a very hectic and stressful last day in Montreal. He's probably on an airplane now. I walked back into my apartment with the odd sensation that it's going to be just me here (plus occasional guests) for the next three months.

It's too soon -- and I'm too tired -- to really be missing him yet, but it definitely feels weird to be alone in the apartment and not expecting him to come home within a few hours.

Just stuff

A few updates from the Julie front:

- Chocolate fondue party is tomorrow. Looking forward to it. On facebook, I've got about 20 confirmed and about 35 maybes so... probably around 25-30 people. Which is about what I expected.

- My birthday is on Tuesday. Yay, birthday! I'll be 28, for the curious.

- Marc leaves on Saturday. Boo! Yes, I've been through summers without him before. No, I still don't like it.

- Drawing class continues to go well. We worked on perspective last week, and we're doing "negative space" this coming week.

- Haven't been to karate in about a week and a half. I'll get more regular about it once Marc's out of town and I don't have him to distract me, I suspect.

- Gaming continues. Joined a Heavy Gear game on Thursday, playing in Ian's "Hunter's Hunted" game tonight (last session before Marc leaves), and D&D remains lots of fun (as witnessed by my "voice of doom" posts).

Thus ends the update. Nothing more to see here. Move along, now.
Why is it that I can brainstorm with Marc for and hour and come up with a really awesome background for his roleplaying character, something we're both really excited about, but in three hours of brainstorming for my character, we both feel like we're hitting our heads against a brick wall?
Today, the Gazette had a little article on sesame balls (in honour of the Chinese new year, I think). My favourite! But, drat and curses!, they didn't include a recipe. Only the address of the restaurant where you can buy them. I read the article, cursed that there was no recipe, and promptly forgot about the whole thing.

Today Marc came home from class with a take-out box containing... three sesame balls! Yay!

I've got the best boyfriend *ever*, and you can't have him because he's mine. *grin*

Yesterday, as part of his paramedic training, Marc got a blood pressure cuff. So, good little girlfriend that I am, I let him practice on me.

It's truly, truly odd to feel your own pulse through the entire length of your arm. Not entirely pleasant, either.

I'll let him do it again, but I can't say I'll enjoy it.

(And, to answer a sentiment by Marc's father, no, this is not "playing doctor." Playing doctor would involve a lot more enjoyment on my part, I'm sure.)
I'm a little slow on my 2009 wrap-up post this year, because I've been truly wracking my brain to come up with more than a paragraph. But what the heck. I'm going to start writing and we'll see where my fingers take me.
