A mystery!

Mar. 5th, 2009 11:37 am
I got into work this morning to find a single red rose sitting on my desk, but no card to say who sent it. None of my co-workers fess up to anything: they seem to be as surprised as I am. One coworker claimed it was him and his desk-mate, but his desk-mate denies it.

So... I wonder who sent it! So exciting!

(I am a little sorry for the flower, which won't get put into a proper vase until I get home tonight around 9, though. At least it's got its little water container for the base of the stem.)

Edited to add: It turns out my secret admirer isn't so secret. (Hint: his name starts with "M" and he's my boyfriend.) I'm so lucky.
I got my new passport today. This has to have been the fastest passport delivery in the history of passport deliveries. Seriously. I went to the passport office late Tuesday morning, and it arrived today. That means it was probably sent out yesterday. Which means a day-and-a-half turnaround at the office.

Amazing. I didn't even pay the "rush" price.
Marc left me a red rose at Dawson's learning centre today, to surprise me when I got in.

I'm so lucky.
When I woke up this morning and looked behind my computer screen, lo and behold there was a box of Ferrero Rochers. I didn't see it last night, but I'm not sure if that's because it wasn't actually there last night, or because I was so damned tired I didn't notice.

The problem: I have no idea who left it there for me.

To the best of my knowledge, there were 3-5 people in my room yesterday other than me, and any of them might have left them.

Hm... time for Julie-sleuthing! (And chocolate...)
I got woken up by a phone call from Ian:

Ian: "We're going for brunch in an hour."
Me: "We are?"
Ian: "Yup! It's in Verdun. Come pick me up at 11."
Me: "Wha... um... k?"

I suppose it beats the other plans I had going for today. *grin*
We're in Ottawa. The situation: when we reserved the room in the hotel here in in Ottawa, they told us that all 1- and 2-bedroom suites had been renovated and no longer existed. Consequently, Ian and I booked two queen-bed rooms, preferably adjoining.

We arrived this morning. The adjoining rooms they were planning to put us in had not yet been vacated. The desk clerk looked for another set of adjoining rooms, eventually found a set, filled out the paperwork, and gave us our keys. I checked the contract: we're still paying the rate for two queen-bed rooms.

We go upstairs to our rooms. One room is a simple queen-bed room. The other is a suite: it's got a bedroom, kitchen (fully equiped with cutlery, pots and pans, stove / oven, fridge / freezer, etc.), and dining- and living-room area. In other words, it's one of the rooms they told us didn't exist. But they're still charging us the regular room price for it. Now, our rooms are pre-paid and non-refundable, so it's not like we can cancel one of them. And, since the price remains the same, I think we're all just going to enjoy our unexpected (but very pleasant) windfall.

But these are the sorts of room that someone must have booked. They're too nice not to be. And they probably paid more than we did. And you know that at some point later this morning, they're going to check in. And then our desk clerk is going to get chewed out by his boss. I feel only the slightest twinge of guilt at this.

Mostly, the only thing I can think is, "score!"
The bad: my car decided to break down tonight. I was on my way to Ian's to deliver a birthday cake for Chris' surprise party, when I realized that my gas guage was dropping rather sharply. I turned the car around, went back home, and realized that in a 10-minute trip I'd lost a quarter-tank of gas. I was unhappy, to say the least, especially since I now had no way to get to the SCA event tomorrow.

In the end, the situation was resolved, with many thanks to Ernst, Freya, and my mom. The car will be towed to my uncle (Mike the Auto Mechanic) tomorrow, Ernst agreed to give me a lift to the site (with Freya as mediator by phone), and my mom kindly offered to give me a lift to Ian's (tonight) and Freya's (tomorrow, where Ernst is staying). So all worked out in the end.

I got downtown to Chris' karaoke party and sang (or listened to singing) for the better part of two-and-a-half hours. Afterwards, I headed off with him, Ian, and a few choice others to go to the surprise party which was being held at Ian's place. I thought it was a party for Chris, and indeed it was. But it was also a party for me, since my birthday is in two weeks. I believe Ian summed it up best, "it takes skill to get someone to buy their own birthday cake and not know it." The cake, which I picked out and brought over, was very, very tasty fudge cake, if I do say so myself.

I didn't stay long, because I want to leave the house at 8 tomorrow to be at Freya's for 8:30, and I still need to pack. Many thanks to everyone who came out, called in, or otherwise conspired to celebrate my birthday. For now, I'm signing off, a quite contented Julie. G'night all.

How odd...

Tonight, I found an envelope slipped under my door. It was addresed to me, but the sender was anonymous. As I opened it, I found two $10 gift certificates to Famous Players. I have absolutely no idea who sent it, or why. The only thing I can think of is that someone really liked all the holidays I've been posting on my door, or something. Because I don't know anyone in this building other than Jane, my floor's don, and she's not the type to leave anonymous gifts.

In other news, today I:
- wrote up the game summary for yesterday night (see last entry)
- wrote the PhD Latin exam and did very poorly
- had fun at the CMS pub outing
- read to page 282 of Game of Thrones
- was introduced to Gregg's Ice Cream (yes, I've been in Toronto since September and have never gone)
- got many confirmations for my going-away party on Friday night. (If you're reading this, you're invited!)
- watched an episode of B5: Wheel of Fire, the 4th-to-last episode of the series

All in all, a very good day. Tomorrow I'm going to get my new bras, pants (they needed to be shortened), and shoes. Possibly I will have tea at the Red Tea Box afterwards. At 6, there's a free cooking class here at Chestnut. Finally, at 8, there's going to be a dessert night at Massey, full of Dufflet pastries goodness.

So there you go. I'm enjoying myself immensely, and I wish the best of luck of everyone who's still not done the semester. Good luck, people writing the German exam! And g'night, everyone!
