1. I'm becoming semi-nomadic -- a view of the changing American dream. Once it was to own a house. Now, at least for some people, it's to have the sort of work where you don't NEED a house, but can work from anywhere in the world.

2. Sugar stacks (pictures) -- a visual resource for how much sugar is in various types of foods. True, they don't distinguish between types of sugars, which can be misleading, but it's a fun site nonetheless.

3. The tea party at the end of the world (short story) -- a Gaiman-esque story in honour of Neil reaching 333,333 followers. It's a story about Armageddon. And tea.

4. The habit list -- what do you do with all those daily little tasks that aren't major enough to put on a to-do list but that you don't want to forget? Make a habit list.

5. Good Morning, Vietnam monologue (2-minute audio) -- this will wake you up. I happen to like Robin Williams' monologues in this particular movie.

6. Army 'double laser' could take out bombs, trucks -- this might be a mark 1 phaser. So cool!

7. How to feed the whole world (TED talk video by Louise Fresco) -- the most valuable part of this for me is that it's not simplistic and it doesn't give easy answers. And the answers that Fresco gives are not the ones you'd expect.
For a while, I've had the idea of writing a little book or booklet called, "Life lessons from the dojo." Essentially, it would be a list of things I've learned while doing karate that can also be applied to personal development. Things like, "everything makes more sense in context" and "you need to look before you move."

I decided, just for fun, to brainstorm what I could think of in terms of these dojo life lessons. After a half-hour brainstorming session, I've got 88. Whew! I think I may be on to something, here!
1. 10 unbeatable tips for overcoming micro-addictions -- according to the article, micro-addictions include seeking approval from others, checking your email dozens of times a day (or hour), and watching television when you know you should be doing other things. Interesting tips.

2. Taking the next giant leap into space (TED talk video by Peter Diamandis -- this is by the guy who set up the X prize and talks, not only about how it was won, but also about the future of the X prize and other, similar prizes. Made me go check out the website, just to see all the cool stuff happening.

3. Why we don't understand as much as we think we do (TED talk video by Jonathan Drori) -- the beginning of the video lists four, seemingly simple questions. (Like "a seed is small; a tree is big. Where does the seed get all the 'stuff' to become a tree?") Trust me, they're not as straightforward as you think.

4. The big picture: observing Ramadan -- some absolutely stunning photos of Muslims observing Ramadan.

5. Why many “alternative income” ideas aren’t worth your time - and what you might do with it instead -- title says it all, really.

6. The prison workout -- when all you've got is a small space, your own body weight, and plenty of time, can you still get in great shape? You bet.

7. Hamlet: Facebook news feed edition -- exactly as advertised. And very funny.
I just spent the better part of an hour and a half cleaning out my SCA files, old publications, etc. At a conservative estimate, I dumped about 45 old Pikestaffs (Pikestaves?), 15 magazines I intend never to read again, and about 5-7" of paper. I put my remaining classnotes into binders instead of loose or in folders. In short, I did a heckuva lot of work.

The downside, of course, is that it's the sort of work that no one will ever see, because it's all in my closet and, really, you only notice about 5-6" of recovered shelf space. I know the difference, and that's the important thing, but it's not one of those jobs that make people stop and say "wow."

On the other hand, it does clear up space for some other files, which will clear up space in my filing cabinet, which will allow me to get all my papers off the desk, which will be a "wow" job... if it ever happens.

Until then, just chuggin' along.
I realize that I've been griping a lot lately, and I apologize to the people who have needed to listen to me do it. That said, I thought it might be time to sit back and think about what I've done over the last few weeks:

Happy, productive thoughts behind here. )
