Four fire trucks with lights flashing are parked across the street. They don't seem to be rushing, though. I hope it's nothing serious.

(I wonder if I should get dressed, just in case we're evacuated.)

Edited to add: Looks like less than five minutes after they got here, they're leaving again. Maybe they got the wrong building? (How embarrassing!)

Not necessarily. It would appear that Montreal is copying TO in that if there's a 911 call, a fire truck appears as well. I think it's that. I remember my father saying something like that one time when I was visiting.

It's possible, though I saw neither police cars nor ambulances, so I'm not sure what kind of 911 call it would have been.

Anyway, they're long gone now. Hopefully they were of service wherever they were needed.

Either that or some burned popcorn set off an automatic alarm. When I was working at a large assisted care and residential complex as a fire safety/security officer, I forgot to turn off an automatic reporting feature of one of our alarms while it was being tested. Even though the monitoring company called immediately, and I told them it was a false alarm, Grand Rapids FD sent a truck around anyway.

Most cities with large residential blocks have similar rules: better to send a bunch of trucks without hesitation than to let a situation get out of control because someone said "Oh, it's just burnt popcorn." Plus, every call-out is also a readiness test and training opportunity.
