Or not.

Apparently, though my brand-new computer has or exceeds all the other requirements, the graphics card on the MacBook is simply not good enough to run Civ IV. I stand by my choice of buying this (rather than a MacBook Pro), given that I really didn't want to spend an extra $1000 to play a single game, but it stings us, precious, it stings.

On the one hand, that's countless hours I won't be frittering away playing Civ IV.

On the other had, I really, really wanted to fritter those hours.

Now, since I'm *not* going to be spending the rest of the evening gleefully playing Civ, the question is whether I want to stay downtown for 3 hours (maybe go to Chapters or something) or go home for 1.5-2, factoring in travel time.

Well, that means that I will see you more often on Friday!

You'd see me in either case. I just wanted to start some single-player games that I could play when I was at home. Alas, I can't.

Get Civ III? Or II? I don't know about you, but I can waste hours on any of them.

I could. And I may yet. It was mostly the niftiness factor of Civ IV that I was craving, though, having played it at a friend's house every week for the last few months.

I'm sure if I'm really jonesing for Civ, I could get one of the earlier versions without too much hassle.

I'm actually pretty surprised --- Civ 4 is an oldish game now... but the aspyr page does indeed say that it needs either an nvidia or ati card...

http://forums.macrumors.com/archive/index.php/t-302213.html claims that it works ok in window'd mode in the early parts of the game, but gets painfully slow in the later parts of the game.

However - if you are looking to get rid of it... I had actually just been thinking that I might want to pick up Civ 4. I have a macbook pro, so it should run fine for me...

I didn't wind up picking it up -- I realized I didn't have the right graphics card before I bought it. (Whew!)

If you do wind up buying it, I'd be interested in trying it out on my machine and just seeing if it'll run (though I suspect it won't).

According to the Amazon reviews, there are people out there with desperately outmoded hardware happily playing the game on the lowest graphics settings, and the latest downloadable patches have addressed most issues of slowness or instability.

Is there a demo version you can download to try out on your computer?

I might try it if I could get my hands on a copy (as photogeek_mtl hinted above), but I'm not willing to spend $55 just to find out it doesn't work.
