A few random thoughts from today

1. I found myself in a classroom this morning with 14 other people my age... none of whom knew what "usenet" was. This freaked me out. I mean, not even when I mentioned things like "rec." or "soc." or "alt." did anyone know what I was talking about. Was I really that precocious in my internet use?
2. In the same class, we were talking about Jewish views on sacred space, and I realized I was the only Jew in the room. Though I've had many conversations about religion and Judaism with many non-Jews, it was extremely odd to be in an academic setting, talking about Judaism, with no other Jews to provide alternate viewpoints. Even when I was at Concordia, the only "Jewish" course content was with a Jewish prof, so I didn't feel too out of place.
3. I feel dumb. In response to my Johari and Nohari post last night, I got a few people take the minute to fill it out. One person (the only one, in fact, who filled out both) signed his name as "vig." I was scratching my head trying to figure out who that was. It hit me like a load of bricks today, and I feel increadibly dumb. (Montreal people who still haven't gotten it: think of our friends' initials. Remember that not all of them use their first name as their name.)
4. Someone at the grocery store used a Visa to pay for a $2.70 purchase. Wtf? Did you really have so little cash on you?
5. I loathe cashiers who return change by giving you the bills and placing the coins on top of them. The coins all slide off, and it takes WAY longer to put away my change. I don't know who tells them to do it like that, but I think they need re-education. Rats may be involved.
6. D&D 3.5 character creation is far more difficult than it needs to be. I'd forgotten how complex it is compared to white wolf. But at least it's done now. I'm playing, essentially a "bard by day, treausre hunter by night" character. And, very oddly for me, all my feats are in weapon stuff and I've got two kick-ass magical (sorry, "enchanted") rapiers. Ah, the benefits of starting at level 6. On the other hand, I hate rules lawyers.
7. Less than 24 hours until Montreal. Yay!
So that's it. It's past my bedtime and I'm going to sleep. G'night all!

Date: 2006-02-15 06:35 am (UTC)I'm--what?--five years older (twenty-eight). And, while I was exposed to usenet a bit during my early high school career, I came from a seriously Early Adopter household--as, aparently, did you. My high school--a *very* high-end prep school--had only the most rudimentery internet capabilities until my third year, and did not adopt school-wide e-mail until the year after I greaduated (which, admittedly, the large geek population thought was way too late.)
From my lay-persons view, the timing is such that I would expect my peers to be familiar only in passing--as recent history--with Usenet--and at that, only the more geek-oriented of my peers. There is a HUGE technology gap in the five years between me and someone who is in grad school having gone straight out of a bachelors--my older classmates and I, along with the teacher, do have to stop and provide breif history lessons on a regular basis, becase the heart of gen-Y began to expand out into the wider world at a time when the Web was exploding as well, so they caught the front of that wave. (there's a whole 'nother sub-topic in here, about how that technology then in turn enabled today's high-schoolers to expand into the wider world at a younger age, with profoundly mixed results, but it's late and I'm tired so I'll stop nattering now.)
But yes, you were that precocious in your Internet use. Hell, I was precocious, and I only just caught the end of usenet (sigh, a summer in alt.callahan's. Diane Duane once answered one of my posts...oh the joy!)
