The tab key fell off my laptop. It was tragic.

The part that connected onto the keyboard had snapped off, which meant that I couldn't just pop the thing back on. I had to take it... [cue ominous music]... to get repaired.

The Genius at the Apple Store (yes, that's his real job title, "Genius") told me that if they had a spare tab key floating around in the back, he could replace it then and there. If not, he'd have to replace the entire top panel of my laptop, which could take up to five days. Sadly, I did not win the good-luck lottery and was forced to turn in my precious laptop and go home computerless.

I was lost. I had absolutely no idea what to do with myself.

Oh, sure, I go for two full weeks every year at Pennsic without a computer and don't miss it. But at Pennsic, I'm over-stimulated with, well, Pennsic. Between the dozen and a half camps on my daily "I want to visit them" list, multiple classes at a time I want to attend, and being double- or triple-booked most evenings, I'd be surprised if I got a chance to use my computer even if I had it. Time at Pennsic is just too precious, because there's so much going on.

There is rather less going on in my apartment.

Furthermore, it occurred to me that just about every project I wanted to do involved the computer at some stage. Sewing? Pattern's on the computer. Reading? Just finished a book and want to write up my Goodreads review before starting another one. Cooking? Most of my recipes are on my computer, and so's the conversion program I use to figure out how much butter I need. Pay bills? Listen to the new Muppets soundtrack? Write up lines of the night from Sunday's game? All need the computer.

Oh, none of it was insurmountable, but it was definitely annoying. I found myself taking things slow, trying to draw out the time between homecoming and bedtime with other things. I had a long talk with Marc after dinner. I really read through the paper. I washed all the dishes. Mostly, I was killing time. I absolutely could not imagine doing this for the next five days and not causing bodily harm to someone. I consoled myself that at least I was working again and had eight hours of net access at work, because if I were still unemployed and had to spend full days at home, alone, with no computer, I might have gone stark raving mad.

When Marc went to bed early, I used his computer. Because I'm that desperate.

Around 9:45, the Genius from the Apple Store called me to let me know that -- surprise! -- he did have a tab key in stock and my computer was fixed. So the five days was actually three and a half hours, and I shall have my precious back in my hands by the end of the day.

Clearly, though, my external brain has taken over my life. I salute my computer overlord and look forward to being reunited soon.
