The curse of working quickly

Today I tackled a backlog of the work I was ultimately hired to do. (i.e. Processing membership renewals.) Even allowing for "I'm new and inefficient" slowness and a decent amount of downtime, I was 90% done by noon and just waiting on one or two email responses. I took lunch until 12:45, finished the last couple of tasks, and was well and truly done by 2:00.
Went to see my boss to find out what's next. She didn't have anything for me. My coworker (the only other person in the office) also didn't have anything for me. "So... should I go home?" I asked. "Yup," said my manager.
Turns out that my workload for the next few days will depend on how many renewals come in the mail. The mail only comes in around 10:30. My manager therefore said not to bother coming in tomorrow, and she'll call me to let me know about whether I should come in on Friday.
So... yay efficiency, boo fewer billable hours. Unless things pick up (which is possible), this job will settle into part-time instead of full-time. Which is fine. I don't mind part time so long as I get enough hours to cover expenses.
Sometimes I'm too efficient (and honest) for my own good.
