Gmail IMAP woes

I'm trying to upload all my old messages from my computer to Gmail's web-based servers, so I'm not dependent on the one computer anymore. For those in the know, I'm doing this via IMAP.
Unbeknownst to me when I started all this, if you try to upload a lot of messages at once, it totally screws everything up, not just halting the upload but also making it impossible to access your online account for several minutes. Apparently "a lot" means more than a dozen or so at a time.
The sum total of what I've accomplished in the last hour is to set up my folder structure. Not actually put any messages into the folders, you understand, just set up the folders. This is incredibly frustrating. I suspect that my one-night project is going to turn into a several-weeks project as I try to get everything online amidst these stupid time-outs.
Edited to add: Screw it. I officially give up for the evening. I'm going to update my D&D character sheet to ridiculously awesome levels of power, and that will make me happy again.
