1. The 10 manliest sea shanties (includes videos) -- even with all my time in the SCA, I only knew half of these. I blame this link for getting "Roll the old chariot" (#2) stuck in my head for over a week. I may need to write an SCA version coming at some point.
2. Quality sleep -- a bit of contrarian advice about how to get better-quality sleep.
3. 10 innovative camping products -- I think we need a #7 for our Pennsic camp. John, what do you say?
4. The real difference between liberals and conservatives (TED talk video by Jonathan Haidt) -- the answers might surprise you. It comes down to values, but not necessarily the ones you might think.
5. Reinventing the school lunch (TED talk video by Ann Cooper) -- I'll give her this: she's passionate. A thought-provoking talk that made me look into local food resources.
6. SOS cuisine -- very cool resource! You enter your postal code, dietary restrictions, and number of people you're cooking for. Then, every week it sends you a customized meal plan, shopping list, and "action plan" based on your choice and what's seasonal and on sale in your local grocery stores. Did I mention it's free?
7. Making and doing: The value of productive hobbies -- a list of inexpensive (and productive) hobbies that not only save you money, but might make you some, as well.

Very fun song to filk. One of my first ever SCA filks was to that song- its satricial, doesn't "use my words well" and its one I have to guage the audience carefully before breaking out.
But seems to be well received so far regardless :)
Its called "Nelson's Awards"-
"Oh a little A O A wouldn't do me any harm x3
...cuz ya know it should be mine"
CHO: "Oh Award, Award Gimmie an Award x3
...cuz ya know it should be mine"
Fill in any awards you want as you go: (I had some scanning fun for the Peerages) "Oh A <> wouldn't do me any harm"
"Little Pelican" "Crown of Laural Leaves" " A Bright Golden Chain" "Crown Upon My Head"
It can be used as a sing along, I've even used it as a call out song when in a mixed-kingdom group :) There's an interlude in the midde i won't type up here- that usually goes before I sing the "crown upon verse" and then I end back with the AOA. But you get the drift. *tee hee*
Like i said - VERY very fun song to play around with.

Date: 2008-09-29 06:57 pm (UTC)- A lady of the rose wouldn't do us any harm.
- A quest from the king wouldn't do us any harm.
- A lass on my knee wouldn't do me any harm.
- A tankard full of mead wouldn't do us any harm.
- A battle in the woods wouldn't do us any harm.
- A 20-man melee wouldn't do us any harm.
And on it goes. It's a fun song. I can't belive I'd never heard it before.
