Today I had a two-hour test at Softitler, a subtitling and closed-captioning company where I've applied to be an English editor. The test consisted of three parts:

1. A pen-and-paper grammar test, which also included some general knowledge questions and (for some reason) a logic problem. I think I did pretty well here.

2. A transcription test: they gave you an audio file, and you needed to transcribe as much as you could. I think I did pretty poorly here, because I only realized about a minute into the recording that I could pause it. So my first minute is full of partial, poorly-transcribed sentences as I tried to keep up with talk-show interview speech. By the time I realized I could pause the file, I also realized I couldn't rewind it, so I'm not particularly happy with the end result on that one.

3. A subtitle-editing test: we were given the beginning of an episode of Gilmore Girls, with subtitles already included, but with many errors. Our job was to fix all the mistakes. I think I did pretty well here also, though there may be a few small errors in punctuation due to some questions I had about their style guide.

In the end, i find out in about two weeks how I did. I refuse to think about it anymore right now.

If you explain to them what happened with the transcription test they could probably give you some leeway on that.

In the time we had afterwards to polish up the transcriptions, I put a short note at the beginning pretty much saying what had happened, and I'll explain again when I speak to them. But yes, I'm hoping I get a bit of leeway.

Have you done the tests as well? And if so, have you gone in for an interview?

The office had a pretty casual dress code when I was there (I saw at least a few people in jeans), but it was a Saturday. Any idea whether it's stricter during the week?
