eveglass: (books in the hand)

Would you believe I only read two books this whole month? And they were both finished in the last five days! Between Marc coming home, classes starting up, and not getting a chance to head out to the library, I just didn't do much reading in September. Many thanks to Anna, who provided a small pile of books from her stash that I'm slowly going through. As always, to see books from previous months, just click on the "books" tag.

57. Treasure Island, Robert Louis Stevenson

Though I've seen numerous movie adaptations, and Muppet Treasure Island is among my favourite all-time movies, I'd never actually read this book before. There were a number of small surprises: first, the language is more advanced than I'd expected it to be for a children's book. Second, there were a number of new characters that weren't in the movies I'd seen, such as Ben Gunn. Finally, the ending was much more abrupt than I'd expected (though perhaps I should have, given other books I'd read from the time period). Final verdict: a fun book, and I'm glad I finally got the chance to read it.

58. The Time Machine, H.G. Wells

Yet another book that's been on my "to read" list for years, but that somehow I never got around to. It's a short book, and I hadn't realized that the style was almost all narration by a single character. Furthermore, it has a fair amount more of social / political commentary than I'd expected: the main character has a tendency to try to figure out how the Eloi (and later, the Morlocks) developed from modern man, taking into account such theories as communism, division of labour, and evolution. I'm not sure how accurate any of the theories are, given that the main setting is eight hundred thousand years in the future, but it's an interesting glimpse into the late 19th century mind. Final verdict: a seminal book for anyone interested in science fiction, especially those interested in time travel.

And that's it! Amazing, no? Don't worry, though. I've got 5 books waiting to be read for next month, and Marc will be out of town for a few weeks, so I'll be reading them to occupy myself. See you in October!

I even knew that, too. Just wasn't looking when I was typing and my fingers wrote the wrong thing.
