This is going to be a long day, I can tell. Usually I only start getting hungry from fasting around 11 -- today it was 8:30. I don't break fast, at least theoretically, until 7:45. I'll be happy with anything after 6, honestly.

I'm alone here. There is food in the kitchen. I know no one will mind if I take it; no one will even know except me. Well, me and God.

And there's the rub. It's so much harder being good when it's on an honour system, when you know you're only doing it for yourself and no one else.

Feh. Time to read the last three chapters of Deuteronomy and write something passable for Daily Breadcrumbs before my brain gets too fuzzy to think straight.

It's one of the few Jewish rituals I try to observe every year, though some years it goes better than others. I don't really do it so much as an atonement ritual as a check to see whether I can still, in fact, go for 24 hours without consuming anything. This year, the answer may well be "no."
