Date: 2007-09-02 10:24 pm (UTC)Worldcon is the World Science Fiction Convention, of which this year's, in Yokohama, was the 65th. The first was held in 1939! A complete list can be found here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Worldcons. Next year's is in Denver. After that, Montreal. So, attending a Worldcon connects you to just about the oldest of fannish traditions.
Yes, there are fannish traditions.
;-)
Worldcons are produced by members of the World Science Fiction Society - http://www.wsfs.org - which exists to: Choose the recipients of the Hugo Awards, select the location of Worldcon, attend Worldcons, and select the locations of occasional NASFiC (the North American convention held when Worldcon is outside of North America).
There's more, much more, but I'll leave it a this.
