The world gone geeky

At the invitation of a few people, I actually went out to the midnight Harry Potter book launch last night. I arrived at Chapters around 10:15, wandered around, and was on the verge of leaving when I bumped into Kristen. So we wandered some more and checked out the various activities. To be frank, they weren't very interesting: hat-decorating, face-painting, etc. They had gone out and acquired an owl (caged) for the occasion, but this was counterbalanced for me by the fact that they had also acquired several cats (also caged), thus preventing me from spending much time on the second floor. Kristen bought a "polyjuice potion" from Starbucks. I have no idea what was in it, but there was some green powder, some brown powder, and it was topped with mini-marshmallows. Fairly tasty, actually. Seeing some of the costumes, and especially the very-well-made cloaks, I had to wonder, "how many people here go to Bicollines?" (a live-action D&D game)
Around 11 I decided I was bored with Chapters and meandered over to Indigo. I immediately met Rachel in full costume but also in full busy mode, so I let her go. Crystal was serving cupcakes and other treats, so I didn't disturb her either. On the other hand, Charles was there and bored, so we decided to give in to my apple crumble cravings and get some pie. We went to Nickles (I know, I know... but it was the closest place to the store), had some lovely conversation mostly involving bardic stories from me and theatre stories from him, and then made our way back. We arrived with a half-hour until midnight, so to amuse ourselves we started mocking book titles in the New Age / Religion section of the store. That kept us occupied until the grand countdown toNew Years the official book release. At that point, they kicked me out of the store because I was not, in fact, buying a book.
On my way towards the metro, the streets were full of people shouting "Harry Potter," waving wands, swirling capes, and just generally being geeky. I love my city.
On my way to the metro, Marc called, and we started talking. And talking. Nearing 1 o'clock, when I was describing the scene for him, he mentioned offhandedly, "ah, Montreal on a Friday night."
Pause. Beat. Friday night? Friday night?!? Not Saturday night? Put thoughts together in brain. That means the metro closes in 15 minutes, not 45! Give some hasty farewells and hang up. Run over to Sharazad to give running hugs to Ian, Kyn, Jimmy, and Kristen, and fly towards the metro. Run down three flights of escalator stares, swipe my card in the turnstyle, reach the top of the last landing... and see the metro pulling away, happy little "last train" lights blinking. I was not pleased. Very not pleased. I thought the last train left at 1:10. It turns out the actual time is 1:03. And I missed it by less than 10 seconds.
I trudged my way back to Sharazad. I sat for a few minutes to get my annoyance at the universe out of my system. I got up. I walked to the night-bus station at Atwater.
One block away, I saw a bus pull up to the stop. I could barely make out the number, 371. My bus. Determined not to be cheated a second time, I sprinted the rest of the way and got there just as the last passenger was being let on. Sat down, stared out the window. Stuck my tongue out at fate, but very, very quietly. Got home around 2. Sleep is my friend.
Now it's tomorrow again. Busy day planned, I think. More updates as the occur.
