Okay, this is yet another time when I draw upon the collected wisdom of my friends' list.
I was considering yesterday (yes, this is always dangerous). Specifically, I was considering the fact that most places I've spoken to about cegep teaching have asked that I have some amount of previous teaching experience: it will give me a big leg-up in a job market where the M.A. is the
minimum requirement. Of course, this means I'm caught in the catch-22 of "need experience to get experience."
So I'm considering teaching english as a second language. Now, I did a bit of cursory research into TESL over the summer. Most of the places I contacted required their teachers to have some sort of TESL certification. A few rejected me outright when I told them I didn't.
So I looked into TESL certification. The regulatory board for TESL certification programs in Canada,
TESL Canada, lists three recognized programs in Montreal. Of them, the best program seems to be the
CELTA offered at ILSC, downtown. The good news: it's an internationally recognized certification, it's only 4 weeks long (albeit very intensive), and there's a session starting in two weeks. The bad news: it's quite expensive... about $2000. Now, I do have the money, and my mom has made it clear to me that if this is something I want to do, money is not an issue.
So my question to you is, does this seem like a good idea? One month and $2000 gives me an internationally-recognized certificate to teach English. Teaching English gives me teaching experience that will allow me to either keep teaching English or move into something like the cegeps. Is there something blatant that I should be taking into account, and am not?
Many thanks in advance!
