Oct. 1st, 2005

Tonight was the Founder's Gaudy at Massey. This is, to all intents and purposes, a normal High Table with some more ritual invovled: namely, everyone drinks from the Massey cup whie their tablemates cheer them on. It's juvenile, but a lot of fun.

Afterwards was Irish country dancing -- also lots of fun. I think I danced for about 2 hours. There are apparently classes every week I'm thinking of signing up for (aerobic activity without the muscle-crunching fatigue of karate).

After THAT, I went to a room party. Lots of people, comfy bed, and (best of all) shisha! A surpringly flavourful mint shisha, to be precise. I was planning on just sleeping over at Massey until I realized I had not turned off my (very loud) alarm, set to go off at 7. Though someone joked I could just leave at 6, in time to turn it off, I decided that I wanted sleep. I tried to leave at around 1:30, only to give in to peer pressure to stay longer (twist my rubber arm). I finally left around 2:30 and grabbed a taxi home.

Now it is late. My evening was lots of fun, and now I go to sleep. G'night all! (Or, depending on what time you're reading this, good morning!)
A few random things that occured over the last few days:

- I found out my score on the Latin exam was 49% -- "quite respectable" according to the Prof. (Perhaps the only time in my life a 49% on schoolwork has been called respectable.) He thinks if I do the work I shouldn't have a problem passing the exam in April. Let's hope so.

- The internet at my rez was fritzing this morning: on for a split-second, off for 5 minutes. The tease! So I did what any self-respecting addict would do: I went somewhere else where I could get a net connection. Here I am at Massey. :) If the problem is not solved by tonight, there may be no update as to how I liked Serenity until tomorrow.

- I bought my train tickets to Montreal. I'm officially arriving in Montreal Thursday night, Oct. 13 at about 9:15 pm (train 66), and leaving Monday morning, Oct. 17th at about 7 am (train 53). I should be back in time to have lunch before my 1 pm class.

- I expect many, MANY hugs when I'm in Montreal. The people here at Massey are amazing, but they're not particularly huggy. Between the two weekends I'm in town in October, I expect enough hugs and snuggles to last me the rest of the semester.

- A friend of mine has suggested that, as entertainment and a way to practice my Latin, I translate The Princess Bride, Good Omens, or HHGttG into Latin. Would anyone be interested in reading a (probably quite bad) translation of a few paragraphs of any of the above?

That is all for now. I return you to your regularly scheduled LJ.
As of 6:30 pm, the internet at Chestnut was still down. So I'm at Massey, doing my log-off post of the night. I probably will be out of touch via email / internet / lj until after lunch tomorrow when I come to Massey again. My phone, however, will be online and ready to receive calls while I do schoolwork and laundry. Or drop me an email and wait until the afternoon for a reply.

I saw Serenity tonight. Went with 15-20 other people from Massey. In general: Good movie! (Dad: there are many rocket lauchers and things that go boom.) True to my movie-watching-with-Ian experiences, I started analysing and deconstructing it afterwards. Thank God people at Massey were doing the same thing, or I'd have felt really awkward.

On the way back to Massey, I wound up having a conversation about deep social commentary with a resident: stuff like the potential effects of higher oil prices, car-free cities, etc. We talked for a while more, and then he went off to bed and I came down here to check my email and lj before heading out.

So that's it for tonight. If all goes according to plan, I should be home by midnight, and I'll likely be going to bed shortly thereafter (by 12:30 or so). G'night everyone, and sleep well!
