Bon guioro, everyone!
Today's update will be relatively short, since the internet cafe I'm using here in Venice is about twice as expensive as the one in Montreal (about 7 euros per hour: ouch!). Also, anyone who is on my "mass emails" list will get this twice, because it will essentially be a copy/paste job today (again, because of the expensive internet service).
So... what have I done recently?
Sunday I went to Mass at the Duomo in Florence. We got to sit directly under the dome in the wooden pews. Wow... powerful stuff! The energy from the words and music echoed off the dome, aplified, and came rocketing back down. We missed high mass, which had a chorus as well, but it was still amazing.
Afterwards on Sunday, I explored the Boboli gardens, which were full of hidden little nooks and crannys.
Yesterday, we did a day-trip to Ravenna and then onwards to Venice. Ravenna is great. We were only there for about 2 hours, because a huge bicycle tour was coming through the same day. However, in that time, we were able to see 2 churches and Dante's tomb. I think that's a new record for us.
The churches in Ravenna are quite different from any of the other ones we've visited so far. First, they were built about a thousand years earlier: in the late-Roman / early-Medieval period. They're light and airy, and have a bit of a Byzantine influence, which can be seen in the beautiful mosaics. Lovely!
Then we got to Venice. I am in love with this city. I love the streets that abruptly end in water, the little bridges, the stores full of glassworks and stunning masks... it's all amazing. This is definitely a tourist's city: I don't think the number of permanent Venetians would fit into St. Mark's square. Regardless, it's great!
We went to some churches today, but I think most of the joy of Venice is just wandering around and getting lost.
Tomorrow (as many of you know) is my birthday. I know you can't call me, but keep sending emails! I love emails! I promise to reply to (almost) all of them!
Final note: I am smarter than this Venetian computer. I asked the girl here whether they had English-layout keyboards. She said they didn't. HOWEVER, I was able to set it up with the English-language layout, using the keyboard control panel, in less than 30 seconds and without the owner realizing. I am so good!
Anway... over and out. This Internet tab is really adding up! Hugs!
