Brunch at the Chateau Vaudreuil
Nov. 14th, 2010 09:44 pmThanks to a gift certificate from Marc's mom, Marc and I headed out to the Chateau Vaudreuil for brunch today. Now, this was several levels of fancy beyond our usual haunts. If we hadn't had the gift certificates, the price of brunch for one person ($43 + tax and tip) would have been more than we usually pay for two people... for dinner. I was a bit worried about what to wear, and eventually settled on jeans with a nice jacket. I wasn't the only person wearing jeans, but we were definitely a distinct minority.
"Brunch" might be a bit of a misnomer in the case of the Chateau Vaudreuil; it was more like lunch. It was mostly served buffet style, and while we could choose a hot main course served at the table (it came included), Marc and I were both so full we decided to pass. The waitress had to double-check that she'd told us about it (she had) and there was a bit of a weird moment where she was like, "You're sure you don't want it?"... but there was enough other food that we really didn't mind forgoing the extra plate.
So, the buffet. There was a main buffet area with lots of nibbly things: little salads, fried vegetables, seafood dishes, some hot dishes... very nice, and lots of it. There was also a pasta station and a custom-made omelet station. Then there was a station with crepes and a chocolate fountain (with fruit for dipping). And finally a very elaborate dessert table with pies, cakes, pastries, fruit, and a cheese platter. Can you see why we skipped the main course?
Everything was very tasty. The desserts in particular were great.
I wasn't quite sure how to leave the tip, given that our meals were paid for with the gift certificate and there was no "settling up" time with the waitress. Instead, I just left it under my saucer. (She came around often enough that she'd see it.) In any case, no one ran after us as we left, so I guess everything was all right.
In the end, would we go back? I'm not sure. It was nice, but it was expensive and fancier than we're used to. I doubt I'd go back if I had to pay for it myself. I imagine it's a very popular wedding brunch destination. (I told Marc that if we get married, we're having brunch at Chez Cora. *grin*) That said, the food was great and the waitress was friendly. If I had another gift certificate, I'd probably go again. Until then, I'll stick to my more budget-friedly haunts.
