Thinking 'bout careers
Sep. 4th, 2010 09:06 amPart of my ongoing job hunt has revolved around the necessary question of what I want to do when I grow up. Most of the jobs I've been looking at have been things like secretarial work or short-term tutoring work, mostly because those are the sorts of jobs that get posted. A friend of mine correctly pointed out that the only idea I've ever put forward that even comes close to resembling a career is cegep teaching, a path that I've mostly let fall by the wayside in the past few years.
Marc asked me last night whether I'd given any thought to other careers beyond cegep teaching. The only other option I've been able to come up with so far is some sort of corporate training or coaching, maybe something like what my father does in his teaching for Learning Tree.
There are only two problems with this plan:
1. Training / coaching jobs are not the sort that get advertised. I'm pretty sure this is a niche where you've got to know the right people.
2. I'm not really qualified to train anyone in business-related topics. All my expertise is in the humanities and English, and ESL teaching isn't *quite* what I have in mind.
So, given that I really don't have any areas of expertise right now, my plan is to start at the bottom of some company somewhere, maybe as a secretary, and eventually work my way into some sort of training position. Or at least develop the expertise I'd need to do training somewhere else. It's not the most brilliant of plans, I'll admit, but it's what I've got for now. At least it's more than I had yesterday.
