eveglass: (books in the hand)
Over the last four months (since moving into my apartment), I've been doing very little reading. Partly this is just internal: even when I've had books on hand, I haven't much felt like cracking open the covers. Partly, though, it's the the library has become a whole heck of a lot more difficult for me to get to. Back when I was living with my mom, the very well-socked TMR library was free and only a 20-minute walk away (5 minutes by car, if I was feel lazy).

The problem is that the TMR library is extremely difficult to get to by public transit from my new apartment. I've been hemming and hawing about joining a new library, and for the last few days I've been checking out local libraries in the hopes of finding one that is both easily accessible and well stocked. There have been a number of strike-outs: the NDG library is teeny-tiny, the Atwater library is smaller than I'd like for the time it takes for me to get there.

Today I checked out the Westmount library. It's relatively easily accessible (the 63 or the 24 will take me there) and open every day and evenings of weeknights. The collection is nice and big, similar to what I'm used to from the TMR library. It's even got a number of Neil Gaiman books I haven't read, which is a feat considering how obsessed I am with Mr. Gaiman's writing. And, as an added bonus, there's a greenhouse attached to the library, which would be a really nice place to sit and think. (Though perhaps not to read, given how damp it is.)

The only downside is that I'm not a Westmount resident, and consequently it will cost me $120 a year to join. I've been musing over this number. It seems large, but it really works out to $10 a month, which is quite reasonable given the amount I usually read. So... comments? $10 a month to join a library. What say you, oh knowledgeable readers of my journal?
