eveglass: (books)
Most of the cegeps are starting up today. If Marc were in town, today would be his first day of school for the semester. (He comes home in seven days. Or have I mentioned that?)

I really miss going back to school. Strange as it may be, I miss my life being divided up into semesters: nice, clear, delineated sections of time with ample breaks in between. I think that a three-semester year of about 15 weeks each, with two-week breaks in between, is just about ideal as a way of structuring my time. And while I will be the first to admit that the thing I hated most about ESL teaching was that I never knew in advance what work there would be for me each semester, it's one of the things I miss most about student life.

(For the record, the other things I miss most about student life are having control over my schedule, being in a state of constant learning, and feeling like I really, really knew what I was doing.)

So, for all you students about to return to the grind, good luck, and enjoy it while it lasts.
Just got off the phone with the landlord company. The credit check went through and all is well. The last thing I need to do to make it official is pay the first month's rent (i.e. October) and get a receipt from the concierge. Since I've got plans for tonight, I'll do it tomorrow after work.

I'm *not* going to be signing a lease, because the lease transfer paper I signed replaces it. I'll just have to get a copy of the lease from the current tenants.

But it's now looking like Marc and I will officially be living on Clanranald starting in October. Woot!
Remember how I mentioned that we need to explain slang and expressions for translators? This one showed up in my file today, courtesy of the editor before me:

"the rug matches the drapes" = my pubic hair is the same color as my eyebrows

I mean, yeah, I suppose it's accurate, but... odd. First time I've ever heard that particular definition. Eyebrows?
A few "feeling sorry for myself" things from today:

1. Realized that the last time I used my ATM card (last Thursday), I forgot my card in the machine for the first time ever. Thankfully, the machine flagged it as lost, so I don't have to worry about anyone making purchases on it. I just need to find time to get a new one tomorrow. Oh, and I had to deal with only having $20 in cash tonight when I promised to take someone out to a cash-only shisha cafe.

2. I've been madly writing stories for a game Ian's going to run. The first two stories went over really well. The one I wrote today... less well. Can't win 'em all, I suppose.

3. The ergonomics of doom are back. My neck and shoulder are really, really unhappy with me. I've *got* to find some way to fix this.
