Question for the LJ Brain (re: Dreamwidth)

Help me, oh great LJ Brain!

A few times now, I've heard the word "Dreamwidth." I gather it's some sort of blogging platform.

What's the deal? Is it like LJ? In what ways is it different? Is it worth opening an account?

What, in short, is this thing?
