Almost 11, and I still haven't been assigned any files yet today. Moreover, the stuff I *could* be doing (like checking my files against the newer, more updated, theoretically better versions of the same file) is impossible, because my files are all on another computer which is currently in use by someone who needs it more than I do. So I'm waiting. Again.
All this gets me thinking about Results-Only Work Environment (ROWE) offices (for more info, see here and here). The idea, which has been implemented by Best Buy, is that only results -- not time spent physically in the office -- count. So if you come in late, work from home, or take extended lunch breaks BUT stay on target with your results, then everything is fine. Furthermore, all tasks are valued based on whether they contribute to results, so meetings are all optional.
ROWE has its problems, for sure. Best Buy implemented it for their head office, but not their actual stores, where it's often necessary to be physically present at particular times (cashiers or sales associates, for example).
On the other hand, I wish someone could come to me at the beginning of the week, say "here are the files we need completed by the end of the week" (or day, or whatever), and let me go at it. There is absolutely no sense to my sitting in an office for over an hour every morning, waiting for people to find me work to do.
