(Please note: eventually, once I get my icons back, work-related posts will have their own icon. Thankfully, I will be making some money soon -- since I'm at work -- and can reinstate my long-lost icons from th depths of LJ holding.)

So. Today marked my second day at my new job. I didn't really post yesterday because I was dead tired from a combination of a poor night of sleep and a really draining first day.

The short version: I'm starting with two other people, though today marked the last day of our shared training. From here on in, we train with different people for our various tasks. For me, those tasks will apparently consist mostly of preparing subtitles for closed captioning and related files for the hard-of-hearing.

The good:
- my co-workers seem quite friendly
- we had a pot-luck today (for a woman going on maternity leave) that was very tasty
- the training is well-structured (probably a first for me)
- the job looks like something I'll enjoy once I get trained up
- officially have the time off for both weeks of Pennsic this year
- I've got an "in": one of my friends from undergrad is also a part-time editor
- lots of variety: the sheer number of projects that come in mean that there's always something new

The bad:
- lots of information coming at me all at once -- there's a lot to learn
- very little internet access (I think, anyway), which is odd given that I'll need the internet to do my job. More on this as it develops.
- long days: 8 hours PLUS time taken for lunch (30-60 minutes)
- I'm sort-of a guinea pig: us part-timers are part of a new thing the company is experimenting with; before a few months ago, they only had full-timers and freelancers
- I don't have my own workstation yet, and probably won't for at least a few weeks (the office is expanding to another floor, so things are a bit chaotic right now)
- a bit obsessive about security measures (though, given the industry, that's understandable)

All told, I'm enjoying myself so far, even if it is quite draining for these first few days. So far it's been mostly orientation, but on Thursday I start training with our actual software, which should be interesting. More as it develops. (Well, as much as I can say without breaking my confidentiality agreement, anyway.)
