Up the hills and away from the zombies (Spoiler alert: Zombies, Run mission 13)

Yesterday's mission continued the investigation that's been going on for the last few runs, yielding a few answers and many more disturbing implications. Also, it confirmed for me how much I dislike walking up hills.

You may recall that on the last mission, Dr. Myers had me pick up a box of patient records for VS72, in the hopes of finding out more information on Patient 29, the guy who may very well have started the entire zombie outbreak. And I got the box, despite the personal risk to life and limb (and brain cells). Which was great, except in going over the records, she and Sam realized that the file for Patient 29 had been removed. Just our luck, huh? It turns out that Dr. Van Ark, the head of the lab, had instructed all of Paula's team to destroy their records, which doesn't make much sense from a medical/scientist perspective, but makes a whole lot of sense if you think you're about to be blamed for a zombie apocalypse.

So yesterday's mission involved going to the Keeley Center, the government labs that were collaborating with Pandora Haze to work on the advanced cell regeneration project known as VS72. All was going well until we had a couple of incoming bogeys on the scanners. Not, as is usually the case, zombies, but real live people with (presumably) real live weapons. And a chopper with the Pandora Haze logo. And, we believe, Dr. Van Ark himself. Oops.

Anyway, I grabbed Patient 29's file and got the hell out of Dodge before the Pandora Haze people saw me. Turns out his name was Arthur Gurkhan, 46, married, lab technician, with no known allergies or diseases. Dead end? Who knows. Next mission has been unlocked for a while, so I doubt it continues this particular plot-line, but only time will tell.

After the mission, Radio Abel continued Janine's tips on how to find and secure a house in these dangerous, post-apocalyptic times. Her suggestions for finding a location were pretty common-sensical (good vantage points, away from main thoroughfares, no structural damage, etc.). Tips for securing the building ranged from the simple (reinforce the windows or fill them with concrete) to the more difficult (install CCTV cameras and airlocks).

Then it was back to Jack and Eugene, in an absolutely hilarious segment where they pretended to be one another, down to imitating each other's accents. (Jack's a Brit, Eugene's Canadian.) I was quite literally chortling as I was walking. Those guys are a riot.

I was a bit concerned at their conversation in the last segment before I stopped walking: they were arguing over who's faster, me or Runner 4, and it seemed like they were going to start placing money on it. I sense a race coming up in my future.

In any case, back in real-world Montreal, my walk took me from downtown to almost-home -- a friend's place in NDG just over 5 km away from my starting point, where I was going to be playing Heavy Gear. (Yes, mechas AND zombies in a single evening! How geeky can a girl be!) The walk was fine to start with. I was making really good time and my shin splints weren't giving me any trouble. Right up until Cote St. Antoine, which is a hill. Admittedly, it's not as steep as The Boulevard or Landsdowne (both streets in the area), but it's plenty steep enough and slowed me WAY down. And was a really good workout, in that "Oh, God, I'm overheating and just want this to end" sort of way. I was glad when I got back onto level ground.

It started drizzling in the home stretch, about a kilometer away from my friend's place. At first, I tried to put up my hood to keep the rain away, but then I realized that I was too overheated and the rain was actually kind of refreshing. So... blessing in disguise? I think?

Note to self: no more hills. I don't care if it takes 10 minutes longer to go along Sherbrooke and up Girouard; do it anyway.

So that's it for now. We'll see what happens in the next mission. Hopefully nothing too terrible? (Yeah... right.)
