I generally fast, this year I didn't as it completely slipped my mind. I believe I still will in the future, though. I agree with you, the G-d I believe in wouldn't really care if I fasted or not, but I think the importance of the action is not the fasting itself, but what it represents: repentance. We all have things we need to repent for, and the fasting drives it home, it is a gesture on our part that says, "really, I am sorry I did these things and I'll try to do better in the future."
